60 airport restaurants participating

October is Airport Restaurant Month at more than 60 HMSHost restaurants in more than 40 airports around the country.

And this year there’s a fun contest on the menu.

Airport Restaurant Month features tasting menus much like those you’ll find in many cities this time year: diners can select from three appetizers and a variety of entrees.

Menus may vary slightly by restaurant, but some of the core Airport Restaurant Month dishes include: 

·      Orecchiette Pasta featuring sautéed super-food greens, parmesan, and buttered herb breadcrumbs

·      Shrimp Scampi Flatbread with garlic shrimp, grape tomatoes, mozzarella, lemon zest, and red pepper flakes

·      Harissa Burger topped with arugula, pickled red onions, harissa aioli, provolone cheese, and smoked bacon

·      Crispy Chicken Sandwich with crunchy Asian slaw, gochujang BBQ sauce, and pickle chips

Now here’s the contest part, which runs through October 31, 2019:

When you eat at one of the participating HMSHost restaurants, ask for an Airport Restaurant Month Passport.

Collect a passport stamp for each Airport Restaurant Dish you purchase.

When you have four stamps, snap a photo of the completed passport and post the image to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #airportrestaurantmonth. Be sure to also tag @HMSHost.

At the end of October 2019, HMSHost will choose a winner at random. The prize will include airfare, a hotel stay and dinner at a James Beard award-winning restaurant in New York City for the winner and a guest. See the full contest rules for Airport Restaurant Month.

Celebrating the Apollo 11 Moon Landing anniversary

Straight to the Moon – well, Houston.

This week pretty much everyone is celebrating and commemorating the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 launch and the first manned mission to land on the Moon.

And today, July 17 -the same day Astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin Buzz Aldrin made their first TV transmission from Earth to space – United Airlines is hosting a special celebration flight from Newark Liberty International (EWR) airport to Houston’s Georg Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH).

Why fly to Houston now?

Houston is also known as “Space City”  because it is home to NASA’s Mission Control Center at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center.

StuckatTheAirport.com is going along on Flight 355. We’re promised space-themed entertainment, inflight gifts (yay!) and “special onboard guests who have first-hand experience in space.”

We think that means astronauts will on board…

Once we land in Houston, we’ll join Space Center Houston’s Apollo Anniversary Celebration and get to tour the Apollo Mission Control Center, among other activities.

We’ll also try to taste some of the special cocktails and menu items being served this month at two OTG restaurants at IAH that were inspired by meals the astronauts ate during the Apollo 11 mission.

But the special “Eat Like an Astronaut” dishes on the menu at Ember Tavern and Tanglewood Grille in United Airlines’ Terminal C and E at IAH look far more appetizing:

Free chowder at SEA airport

Monday, February 25, 2019 is National Chowder Day. To celebrate, the Pacific Northwest restaurant chain, Anthony’s, is giving away a free cup of chowder with each entree purchase.

One place to take advantage of this offer is at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, which has an Anthony’s restaurant in the central terminal area overlooking the airfield.

The restaurant has been one of highest grossing and most popular dining spots at SEA airport for years, but the restaurant is closing at the end of March as part of the airport’s refresh of airport dining venues.

So, beyond the lure of free chowder on National Chowder Day, if you’re passing through SEA airport on Monday, February 25, 2019, this is a good time to stop in an enjoy a meal with a view at the airport Anthony’s.

Eating at airports: 2 ideas to steal from Heathrow

For a trip to London this week, I had the great treat of getting an upgrade (both ways, thank-you!) to Virgin Atlantic’s swank Upper Class cabin.

That’s not what I want to crow about today.

Instead, I want to mention two great dining amenities I spotted at Heathrow Airport.

At Spuntino, an airport outpost of a popular London restaurant known for its Italian/American comfort food, prohibition era-inspired cocktails and its great blues soundtrack, there was sign outfront that let customers know how long it might take to get served once they sat down and ordered.

That’s exactly what most travelers want to know when deciding between sitting down in a restaurant, grabbing something from a shop or just winging it with what’s offered on the airplane.

I hope this is adopted by more airport restaurants.

Another great amenity, offered at Spuntino and many other Heathrow airports during holidays and school vacation weeks (and year-round at a few restaurants), is a Kids Eat Free Menu that includes one free kids entree for each adult entree offered.

Good work, AtYourGate

As the tweet above notes, the in-airport gate delivery app service called AtYourGate is marking the one-year anniversary of its debut at San Diego International Airport with a $5 off promo (AYGFREE), plus free delivery.

The promo code is good for use on Tuesday, February 5 in all the airports AtYourGate now serves.

Since its debut at SAN a year ago, AtYourGate has expanded its service beyond SAN to Newark Liberty International Airport (Terminals A and B, and the pre-security area of Terminal C), LaGuardia Airport (Terminal B), JFK Airport (Terminal 7) and Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

How does AtYourGate work?

Say you (or you and your kids) go through the security checkpoint and find a nice spot to sit by the window near your gate.

Rather than gather up all your things to go get something to eat, AtYourGate lets you open an app, check menus of restaurants in your terminal and (nice touch) in others.

When you make your choices, the app lets you place your order on your phone. Someone picks up the order and delivers it to you where you’re sitting.

In most of the airports they serve, AtYourGate will also delivery non-food items, such as neck pillows and phone chargers as well.

There’s a small delivery charge (waived on Feb 5), but otherwise you’re paying the posted menu prices. You’re also getting the convenience of not having to roam the terminals. And it means you’re not limited to the options in the concourse or terminal you happen to be leaving from.

I’ve been covering AtYourGate since before its roll-out. Last week I walked Newark Airport Terminals 1 and 2 with a representative of AtYourGate (Thank-you, Mike, for your time) and learned some bonus details about how the service operates. And I got to see the team in action.

A few things I learned:

*Orders you make via the AtYourGate app go to the front of the line at the concessions you’re ordering from.

*The AtYourGate delivery team is dispatched by app as well and is ready to grab the order the moment it is ready so they can hustle it over to you in an insulated bag.

*Because TSA employees have learned how great it is to get a meal delivered to where you are in the airport, the AtYourGate employees get VIP treatment at the security checkpoints.

*I followed along for a couple of deliveries between terminals and had to hustle to keep up with the delivery people. AtYourGate promises delivery within a certain timeframe, so the hustle wasn’t to impress me.

Free meals for active military at airports on Thanksgiving

On Thanksgiving Day active-duty military members will be able to get a free meal at airports in restaurants (listed below) operated by Delaware North.

Traveling on Thanksgiving day but not active militiary? Your meal won’t be free, but you’ll find many airport restaurants have turkey and Thanksgiving-themed meals on (traditional and not) on their menus.

 

On Thanksgiving Day, active-duty military members who show their military ID will receive one free entrée item and a free non-alcoholic beverage at more than 150 participating restaurants in 18 airports where Delaware North operates food and beverage outlets.

Fresh eats at Denver International Airport

Just in time for the busy holiday travel season, the Denver Central Market has opened at Denver International Airport.

Denver Central Market is at Gate A6 at Denver International Airport. The gourmet market and food hall houses a variety of local restaurants, including several vendors from the city’s Larimer Street marketplace such as Vero Italian offering hand crafted pizzas, artisanal meats, cheeses and sandwiches by Culture Meat & Cheese and rotisserie chicken and fresh salads from SK Provisions.

Also in the Denver Central Market: Susi Rama, plus grab n’ go items, espresso drinks, a full bar and a common dining space equipped with charging stations.

Looks yummy, right?

Airport Restaurant Month is back

It’s back. For the fourth year running, HMSHost is hosting Airport Restaurant Month.

 

Taking a cue from the popular Restaurant Week promotions that take place in many cities this time of year, HMSHost is hosting Airport Restaurant Month at more than 50 North American airports.

Prices and menus may vary a bit in the participating restaurants in airports across the country, but during HMSHost’s Airport Restaurant Month you’ll find a featured seasonal menu:

  • Seared Salmon – topped with basil pesto.
  • Vegetarian Flatbread – topped with basil pesto, goat cheese, tomato compote and sunflower seeds
  • Roasted Chicken Breast – topped with basil pesto and sage chicken jus
  • Better Than Bacon Burger – topped with fontina cheese and bacon-tomato compote
  • Grilled Pesto Shrimp Wrap – baby kale, roasted mushrooms, peppers and asparagus served with mushrooms and asparagus

Each entrée is being served with roasted mushrooms and asparagus, crispy smashed potatoes tossed with baby kale and a serving of fresh fruit.

This year there’s also a special cocktail for Airport Restaurant Month. In most of the participating venues you can order “The Temptation,” which features Templeton Rye whisky with a touch of malbec, lemon, and maple syrup – all topped with grapes. Can’t miss: giant cheese & maple syrup at Burlington Int’l Airport

It’s only Monday, but we already have a contender for “Airport amenity of the week.”

Travelers passing through Burlington International Airport in Vermont will certainly notice the 7-foot-tall jug of Dakin Farm maple syrup and the 7-foot-long block of cheese from the Cabot Creamery.

The giant, selfie-friendly food items not only promote Vermont-made products, they’re linked to a special on-line offer that includes a discount on a quart of real maple syrup and a free box of buttermilk pancake mix.

Many a Vermont visitor has likely ended up discarding or handing over just-bought bottles and jugs of maple syrup at the BTV security checkpoint, so the mail-order syrup offer is a good way to make sure souvenirs of Vermont make it home.

Travel Tidbits from SEA, TPA and Changi airports

Happy Friday! Here are some travel tidbits and ‘coming atttractions’ from several airports.

And for long-haul travel, Singapore’s Changi Airport has rolled out a new stopover program that includes a (one-way) hotel transfer, a SIM card and an overnight stay at one of 20 participating hotels.  Packages start at S$63 – about $46 US dollars.
