IND Airport Welcomes College Football National Playoff Championship

Indianapolis International Airport (IND) is all spruced up to welcome nearly 100,000 visitors to town for the College Football National Playoff Championship. Festivities will be taking place all weekend leading up to the Jan. 10 championship game at Lucas Oil Stadium.

In addition to lots of fun signage and pop-up souvenir spots, IND will be hosting live music performances in Civic Plaza by Indy musicians from January 7 to 11 from 1 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

There’s also a photo opp site set up outside the Ground Transportation Center featuring a goalpost mural with 3D effects.

And the 22 For 22 poster show is on display in Civic Plaza through Jan. 11. The exhibit features poster art by 22 graphic artists and illustrators from Central Indiana and focuses on a theme of common football phrases.

Fans are invited to bid on framed 24×36 prints of their favorite designs through Sunday, January 9. Proceeds go to Teach Indy.

Here’s a sampling of the posters.

NY Jets football fans can sign up for TSA Precheck at home games

Football fans take note:  If you keep meaning to sign up for TSA Precheck but can’t make the time to go to the airport for the in-person interview part of the application, you now have the option of taking care of that task at NY Jets home games at MetLife Stadium.

An IdentoGO processing station will be set up between lots E and F outside of the MetLife gate during home games throughout the 2017 season.

Both Delta Air Line and Alaska Airlines are offering sports fans discounts on airfare to cities where away games are being played.

Delta Air Lines just announced up to 10 percent off fares to away games for the Seattle Seahawks and the Seattle Sounders (soccer). To get the discount, enter NMK7V in the “Meeting Event Code” field when booking on delta.com.

Alaska Airlines continues to offer early boarding to Seattle Seahawks fans wearing NFL quarterback Russell Wilson’s No. 3 jersey on flights departing Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The airline is also offering a 10 percent discount on flights to certain away games. Details here.

Alaska Airlines give some Seahawks fans extra perk

Alaska Airlines, Seattle’s hometown carrier, is charged up about the fact that the Seattle Seahawks are the reigning Super Bowl champions.

So charged up that the airline is offering early boarding privileges on its Seattle-departing flights to anyone wearing a No. 3 jersey – the number worn by Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.

The promotion will continue through the team’s 2014 NFL football season.

The perk began being offered during the Seahawks’ playoff run last year.

“Then the Seahawks fever caught on and was out of control for both customers and our Seattle-Tacoma International Airport employees,” said Alaska Airlines Seattle customer service manager Michelle King. “We’re excited to extend the promotion again to support our hometown team.”

While fans will certainly be seen wearing the jerseys of other popular players, Alaska Airlines has a multiyear promotional partnership with the Seahawks’ star quarterback and last December named Russell Wilson the airline’s “Chief Football Officer,” featuring him in a series of cute commercials and dedicating a plane in his honor.

In addition to the early-boarding perk for jersey-wearing fans in Seattle, the airline is offering promotional fares – for everyone – for flights to away games in San Diego, Washington, D.C., St. Louis, Kansas City, Mo. and Philadelphia.

Super Bowl XLIX? Phoenix Sky Harbor is ready

Super Bowl XLIX will be played at the University of Phoenix Stadium on February 1, 2015 – about six months from now – but Sky Harbor International Airport is already planning how it will welcome all the football fans that will be coming to town.

To remind everyone that the countdown is underway, the airport has installed two giant digital clocks in the baggage claim area of Terminal 4 to mark the days, hours and minutes until the big game.

In the month surrounding the big game, Phoenix Sky Harbor expects to serve about 4 million passengers. Many will be attending the game, of course, but plenty of people will be coming to town to party in the 12 downtown city blocks that will be turned into Super Bowl Central for the four days leading up to the game.

Flight searches may predict the Super Bowl match-up

There are all manner of predictions about which NFL teams will meet at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., on Feb. 2 for Super Bowl XLVIII and which team will leave the field hoisting the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

But online travel agency Expedia suggests that spikes in Super Bowl weekend travel searches offer a good indication of which teams fans believe will actually end up in the championship game.

“For the eight remaining teams in the playoffs, demand for flights into New York is the strongest out of Seattle, followed by San Francisco, Raleigh-Durham and Denver,” said Jeremy Boore, travel analyst for Expedia.com.

Though Super Bowl favorites the Denver Broncos “had a slight hiccup” in week 15 of the season after losing to the San Diego Chargers, searches for flights into New York from that area have grown “at about the same rate as their probability of playing in the big game,” Boore said.

The probabilities, from Massey-Peabody Analytics, are determined by teams’ Massey-Peabody ranking and home-field advantage, as well as by chance.

The Bronco’s favored opponent, the Seattle Seahawks, “had a similar hiccup” in week 16 after losing to the Arizona Cardinals. However, Boore said, they not only remain the odds-on favorite to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl “but have the highest volume of searches for flights into the NYC area for each of the past eight weeks of the season.”

And though the San Francisco 49ers have just a 5 percent probability of making another appearance in the final game, according to Massey-Peabody analysis, on Expedia the team has the second-most searches for flights into NYC over Super Bowl weekend. That correlates with many pundits’ laying odds that the 49ers will win the game.

Of course, any fan planning to be at the Super Bowl in person will soon have to stop searching for fares and actually buy a plane ticket and a game ticket, and find a place to stay.

Travelocity reports that for Jan. 31 to Feb. 3, round-trip airfares below $385 are currently available between New York-New Jersey area airports and most all Super Bowl-hopeful cities.

On Jan. 6, fares could be found from Denver for $266, New Orleans for $216, Charlotte for $299, San Diego for $379, Boston for $199, Seattle for $385, San Francisco for $318 and from Indianapolis for $358.

It’s no surprise that hotel rates for Super Bowl weekend are extremely high in the areas around the stadium, and are up appreciably in New York City compared with the same weekend in 2013 and to other weekends in February 2014.

In New York, “expect to pay an average of $300 per night with restrictions and minimum stay requirements,” said Courtney Scott, Travelocity’s senior editor. “Although cheaper rates may be found by booking a flight and hotel vacation, or by searching hotels across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the New Jersey metro area.”

Hotels closest to the Super Bowl venue are the ones charging the most, “and there have been reports of a hotel in New Jersey charging $1,000 a night,” said John Fox, of hotel advisory firm PKF Consulting.

But people don’t just go to the Super Bowl for the football. Many related events will be held in Manhattan, including a four-day celebration in Times Square.

“Remember, New York City has almost 100,000 hotel rooms,” Fox said. “That’s considerably more than most past host cities. And the city is already geared up to welcome more than 55 million visitors, overall, this year.”

While the Super Bowl may push up nightly hotel tabs in the city to match those during the peak holiday weeks in December, Fox said, “there should be plenty of options of finding a place to stay.”
