How Airports & Airlines Marked April Fools Day

We were pleased to see so many airports and airlines – and the National Railroad Passenger Corporation – Amtrak – having so much fun on April Fools Day.

Aviation museums also got in on the fun.

Here are some of the April Fools Day “news items” we encountered. Let us know if we missed some your faves.

UFO Displayed at Seattle’s Museum of Flight

In an April 1 release, the Museum of Flight in Seattle announced it would put on display an unidentified flying object (UFO) recently recovered from a crash site in a remote area in Washington state.

Here’s what it looks like:

Clearly, it’s an April Fools Day joke. But we love that the museum created a full backstory for this UFO:

Following a rash of inexplicable UFO sightings worldwide, the wreckage and debris field from a small disc-shaped object were discovered at a remote desert location near the decommissioned Hanford Nuclear Site in Washington state. The UFO was initially detected by NORAD as it raced through the restricted airspace of Hill Air Force Base in Utah. The phenomena continued erratically on a northern flightpath and fiery descent to an impact zone in the remote desert hills of Benton County, Wash.

Military officials quickly removed tons of topsoil from the crash site to preserve any toxic fluids or alien biological matter that may have exited the disc. The object has displayed no signs of hostile intent, but extra security measures will be in place while it is on display at the Museum.

Plenty of airports and airlines got in on the fun. And many ‘announcements,’ such as Charlotte Douglas International Airport’s notice that it was removing the rocking chairs to make more room, no doubt made readers look twice.

But others, like KLM’s recline alert system and Geneva Airports’ ski-through-the-terminal updates aren’t totally silly ideas.

Cherry Blossom Season in DC. And at Dulles.

It’s cherry blossom season in many parts of the country right now. And in Washington, DC the National Cherry Blossom Festival is in full swing.

Festival events are scheduled through mid-April. But the National Park Service declared Thursday, March 23 as the day that the cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin reached peak bloom.

Travelers heading to or from Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) will also be able to celebrate cherry blossom season. As per tradition, the Dulles terminal is lit in pink.

And you can tell the IAD team is pretty darn excited about the display this year.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day at the Airport

Love really is in the air at many airports this Valentine’s Day.

We’ve been gathering news of the events and Valentine’s Day offerings at airports, including the pop-up marriage license bureau at Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) in Las Vegas and the carnations and hand-cut felt hearts Philadephia International Airport (PHL) is handing out.

Here are some more events to look for at US airports:

Free Love Poems at Long Beach Airport

On Valentine’s Day, travelers at California’s Long Beach Airport (LGB) will be able to get free custom-crafted love poems while they wait.

Current West Hollywood City Poet Laureate, Brian Sonia-Wallace will be in the airport between 5 pm and 7 pm with an antique Remington typewriter. He’ll commemorate individual travelers’ love stories with poems created and typed out on the spot.

A second typewriter will be available if passengers want to type their own poems or messages.

Free Flowers at Jacksonville International Airport

As they have since 2009, with a pandemic pause, Airport Ambassadors at Florida’s Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) will be handing out more than 1,000 red, white, and pink carnations to travelers and airport visitors on Valentine’s Day.

More Valentine’s Day Offers at Airports

Between 10 am and 12 pm on Valentine’s Day, Orlando International Airport (MCO) will be hosting a special Paw-Pup snuggle booth staffed by several of the therapy pups from the MCO Paw Pilots program. Look for the booth by the airport’s atrium fountain.

Be among the first to show up you may be one of the lucky dogs who wins a pair of Paw Pilots socks modeled by the pup in the photo.

Need some Valentines? San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC) and John Glen Columbus International Airport (CMH) have you covered. And Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is offering a Valentine discount code (good through 2/19/23) for 25% off mobile orders at LAXOrderNow.com.

Pop-up Marriage License Bureau at LAS Airport

Thinking about getting married or renewing your vows in Las Vegas, the “Wedding Capital of the World,” on or around Valentine’s Day?

You’re far from alone.

Getting married in Las Vegas around Valentine’s Day is so popular that the clerk’s office in Clark County, Nevada typically issues more than 1,500 marriage licenses around Valentine’s Day.

That’s about twice the number of licenses issued during a non-holiday period. And can lead to long lines at the County Clerk’s office downtown.

The Clark County Clerk’s office is all about love.

And to save time for lovebirds flying into Las Vegas, for the fifth year, the clerk’s office has set up a temporary marriage license office at Harry Reid International Airport (LAS).

The pop-up clerk’s marriage license burea will be open through February 14, Valentine’s Day in the Terminal 1 baggage claim area near Carousel 5.

Hours are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

The temporary office will only issue marriage licenses and vow renewal certificates. And will only accept credit/debit card payments to cover the $102 marriage license fee.

Tips for Lovebirds

If you’re thinking of getting married in Las Vegas, here are some tips from the Clark County Clerk’s Office to help move the process along smoothly:

*To save time, fill out a marriage license pre-application. You’ll find the forms on the County Clerk’s website at weddings. vegas. (Select “Marriage License Application” from the top left corner of the website.)

*After completing the application online, note the reference number. Bring that with you to the pop-up marriage license bureau.

*And bring proper identification, such as a driver’s license or passport.

The Marriage License Bureau, a division of the Clark County Clerk’s Office, issues about 80,000 marriage licenses annually and is one of the busiest in the world. In 2022, there were 79,279 licenses issued. That’s the highest since 2016 when 81,325 licenses were handed out.

Airports, Airlines Celebrate the Lunar New Year

January 22 is the beginning of the Lunar New Year 2023, which kicks off the Year of the Rabbit.

Here’s how some airports and airlines around the world marked the day.
