Souvenir Sunday

Souvenir Sunday: Bellingham International Airport

Each Sunday here at StuckatTheAirport.com is Souvenir Sunday, the day we take a look at some of the fun, inexpensive and local items for sale at airports.

This week’s souvenirs come from Washington’s Bellingham International Airport, a tiny airport just south of the Canadian border and 90 miles north of Seattle.

Bellingham Airport

Allegiant, Alaska and Horizon airlines have been adding flights to and from this airport at prices that make it worthwhile for many people to skip larger airports in Vancouver and Seattle.

A terminal expansion is about to get underway to accommodate a passenger count that has skyrocketed from 70,000 passengers a year to more than 400,000 in just six years. In the meantime, though, travelers must make do with limited services.

And that means shopping for souvenirs in the tiny all-purpose lobby snack/gift shop.

There’s not much room for much stock over there in the corner, but I found neck pillows sewn by the shop manager’s sister, plenty of souvenir shot glasses, some mugs with northwest Native American designs and, in the under $10 range, hazelnuts and few other local food items.

I have high hopes for the shopping options I might find when the airport completes its expansion.

During this past weekend’s annual Whatcom Artist Studio Tour, I visited some of the great glassworkers, jewelers, painters, carvers, potters, weavers and other artists working in Bellingham and Whatcom County and it would be a great treat to see some of this work on display at the airport.

Souvenir Sunday at Pittsburgh International Airport

Each Sunday here at StuckatTheAirport.com is Souvenir Sunday – when we take a look at some of the fun, inexpensive (under $10)  items you can buy at airports.

I found this week’s treats at Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT):

PIT Chocolate hockey puck

This chocolate hockey puck was cute and tasty, but these Steelers stickers – for sale at the airport Rite Aid for just $2.19 – were by far the best deal.

But my favorite item for this week’s Souvenir Sunday has got to be these jars of “Pittsburgh Penguin Poop” candy  – another entry in our growing list of “poop” candy sold at airports.

Have you spotted a great souvenir while you were stuck at the airport?  If it cost less than $10, is “of” the city or region and is, ideally, a bit offbeat – please take a photo and send it along. Your souvenir may be featured on a future edition of Souvenir Sunday.

Souvenir Sunday at London Heathrow Airport

London Airport souvenirs

There’s never enough time to do everything I want to do in London, but on my most recent visit I managed to squeeze in quite a lot in just three days.

Activities were wedged in between a meal seasoned with performances by contortionists and flame-embellished dancers at a West End cabaret bar named Circus, Afternoon Tea at The Langham’s Palm Court and whiskey tasting (before and after dinner) with the whiskey sommelier at The Athenaeum Hotel.

Whiskey tasting at The Athenaeum in London

Forks-down highlights included a visit to the funky top floor apartment Jimi Hendrix lived in from 1968-1970 (more about honoring Hendrix here); a Fat Tire Bike Tour past iconic monuments, memorials and palaces (more about that here), and walking tours of upscale, low-key Primrose Hill and East London, which is brimming with hip art galleries and stores chock-full of clothing by up-and-coming designers.

I couldn’t afford to buy anything in any in-city shops, so that left souvenir shopping at Heathrow Airport.

London souvenirs

Souvenir Sunday was coming up – the day Stuck at the Airport looks at fun, inexpensive items for sale at airports – so I focused on items selling for under £10, which right now equals about $16.

Here are a few of my favorites:

And of course:

Meet the (scary-looking) Beatles. That's not really Ringo is it?

If you find a great souvenir while Stuck at the Airport, please take a photo and send it along. Your souvenir may be featured on a future edition of Souvenir Sunday.

[Note, my trip to London was part of a research trip for several articles in progress unrelated to whiskey, cabarets and shopping and was hosted by Air New Zealand, Visit London and The Athanaeum.  Thank-you.]

Souvenir Sunday: get some gold at Sacramento International Airport

AYP Novelty Shop from UW Libraries, digital collection

Sunday is Souvenir Sunday here at StuckatTheAirport.com. It’s the day we take a look at some of the fun, inexpensive and “of” a city items you might pick up when you’re stuck at the airport.

This Sunday’s souvenir comes to us from Sacramento International Airport.

Sacramento Made fruit crate label

Back in 1848, you may remember from your history books, gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill, not far from Sacramento. This set off the California Gold Rush and a massive migration to California.

Today, you don’t have to go to all that trouble of mining for gold in Sacramento. You can just pick up a few of these tiny gold-filled bottles at the airport on your way home.

Do you poke around for souvenirs when you’re stuck at the airport? If you see something fun, inexpensive ($10 or less) and “of” the city or region, please snap a photo and send it along to use here at StuckatTheAirport.com.  Your souvenir may be featured on a future edition of Souvenir Sunday.

Souvenir Sunday: New York souvenirs at Newark Airport

It’s Souvenir Sunday – the day we take a look at some of the fun, inexpensive gifts you can buy when you’re stuck at the airport.

This week, we ponder why the Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)- which is definitely located in New Jersey – has stores stocked with so many souvenirs that promote New York City.

I love New York magnets at EWR

I’m not complaining.

Last time through, I was also pleased to see that EWR also had a branch of the iconic Oyster Bar & Restaurant from Manhattan’s Grand Central Station.

EWR also has a few other new restaurants to check out on your next layover:

Currito Cantina and Tony Roma’s in Terminal A, Blue Point RA Bar (raw bar) and Champps Americana in Terminal B and Hamachi Sushi in Terminal C.

I love NY T-shirts at EWR

Did you find some great souvenirs last time you were stuck at the airport?

If the price tags are around $10, and the souvenirs are “of” the city or region and, ideally a bit offbeat, please snap a photo and send it along.

Your souvenir may be featured on a future edition of Souvenir Sunday.

Souvenir Sunday: rodeo treats at William P. Hobby Airport

This week’s souvenirs come to us from Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport, where the Houston Rodeo store offers up plenty of cute cowboy items – all under $10.

There’s this great bull-riding toy;

And, of course, this Rodeo Princess Tiara, which could be worn on all sorts of occasions.

Each Sunday here at StuckatTheAirport.com is Souvenir Sunday;  the day we give thanks for the fun, inexpensive souvenirs you can find when you’re stuck at the airport.

This week’s treats come to us from Boston Logan International Airport’s Boston Tops shop, where the clerk on duty was kind enough (after a bit of cajoling..) to model this cute lobster cap for us.

Not a hat person?  We also found these fun Boston and Massachusetts-centric souvenirs in the store. Like the pot-holder with lobster-cooking instructions, each items sells for under $10:

Souvenir Sunday: Free rides on Singapore Airport’s Giant Slide

Each Sunday we take a look at some offbeat, inexpensive souvenirs you can find when you’re stuck at the airport.

This week, the airport souvenir is an experience:

A ride on Singapore’s Tallest Slide and the World’s Tallest Slide in an Airport.

The Slide @T3 is actually two slides: one is a free-to-ride“preview” slide one and half stories long;

The other is four stories high and is free to ride if you’ve spent at least $30 at one of airport shops.

Here’s a video of the “making of” the slide:

Looks like fun!

Have you been through Singapore’s Changi Airport lately? Did you ride on the slide?

And..next time you’re stuck at the airport, look around. If you find an inexpensive souvenir that’s “of” the city or region and, ideally, a bit offbeat, please take a photo and send it along. It may end up featured on a future edition of Souvenir Sunday. And if it is, we’ll send you a Stuck at the Airport souvenir.

Souvenir Sunday: emergency underpants at the Greenwood Space Travel Supply Co.

What would the souvenir stand look like at the airport where flights took off for outer space?

Greenwood Space Travel Supply co.

Shopping at the Greenwood Space Travel Supply co

No doubt just like the Greenwood Space Travel Supply Co. in Seattle, where there’s an Atomic Teleporter on-site and shelves full of useful and just plain fun and bizarre things for that out-of-this-world trip.

Greenwood Travel Supply Co. space teleporter

Come by later

Unfortunately – or maybe, fortunately – the space teleporter was out of service this weekend when we stopped by, but that just left more time for shopping.

Travel supplies at Greenwood Travel Supply Co.

Our goal on Souvenir Sunday is to find the best and, ideally, the most offbeat items in the under $10 range. Often, that’s a challenge.

Not here.

We found these luggage tags good for intergalactic travel:

A useful repair kit:

And the perfect snack food for the ride.

Freeze-dried ice cream

Snacks for the trip

And, because you never know just what will happen on any trip, we stocked up on some emergency underpants in convenient reusable tins.

Be prepared

Whether the space teleporter ever gets fixed or not, the Greenwood Space Travel Supply Co. is an incredibly fun place to stock up on travel supplies for any sort of adventure.  It’s also a good cause: all proceeds from the shop benefit 826 Seattle, a non-profit writing center that helps young people develop their writing skills. When we stopped by there was a neighborhood-wide hang-out-in-the-street-event going on and these young writers were creating and performing poems based on quick interviews with passersby.

If you’re stuck at an airport somewhere on earth, take a look in the souvenir shop. If you find something there that’s fun, offbeat and under $10, please take a photo and send it along. Your souvenir may show up on a future edition of Souvenir Sunday. And if it does, we’ll send a special souvenir your way.

Greetings from Earth

Wish you were here
