Contest

Win a ticket for a flight into space

http://youtu.be/aiXGUDnbSqs

The folks at AXE ( a line of grooming products for men) have kicked off a contest to give away 22 tickets for a seat on a suborbital spacecraft – and they’re recruited astronaut Buzz Aldrin to help with the promotion. (See below).

Rules vary by country and market, but it appears that contestants outside the U.S. need to create an “astronaut profile” explaining why they want to go to space, gather enough votes to qualify for some sort of challenge that might win them a spot in a space camp in Orlando, Florida and from there possibly get chosen for one of the 22 slots on the flight.

Entrants from the U.S. appear to have it much easier. Just go to this site before February 3rd and fill out a form.

Travel tidbits: JetBlue travel waiver & a contest

I’m racing to finish my book about things museums don’t show you, so just two quick travel tidbits for you today:

There’s still a lot of fall-out from Hurricane Sandy in the Northeast, including the fact that many schools are canceling or moving their mid-winter break times because schools were closed during the storm. That’s messing up plans many families have made for mid-February vacations.

To help out, JetBlue is waiving change fees for travel to or from New York airports (JFK, LaGuardia, Newark, Newburgh, White Plains) on Thursday, Feb. 14 through February 25, 2013, (although passengers are still responsible for any difference in airfares.

(Please let me know if you discover other airlines doing the same.)

And, in addition to some special events and in-store sales, the Philadelphia Marketplace Food & Shops at Philadelphia Airport is running a Facebook Friday contest . Answer some trivia questions to be entered in a contest for fun prizes.

Tidbits for travelers: MSP Wi-Fi, JetBlue election protection

Travelers with lots of time between flights at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) can now surf the internet for free.

To get a 45 minutes of complimentary WiFi service, you’ll need to watch a short ad or take a quick survey, but there’s a timer that will let you know how much time you have left and you can get another session by watching another ad or taking another survey. Not all airports will give you another session, so this is a good compromise.

And it means you can also wait until you’re at the airport to log onto the MSP website and download the coupon booklet that offers discounts in many of the food and shops.

And here’s a nice touch: if you want a commercial-free, faster, premium service, the cost is just $2.95 for 24 hours. Before this new service, that fee was $7.95.

And here’s another (potentially) great deal: JetBlue has a fun contest running called “Election Protection,” which invites people to cast a vote for president in an on-line poll and enter a contest to win a free trip out of the country if you choose the losing candidate. Destinations include the Bahamas, Mexico, Costa Rica, Turks & Caicos, Grand Cayman, the Dominican Republic, St. Maarten, St. Lucia, Barbados, Aruba, Columbia, Bermuda and Jamaica.

Jet Blue giving free books to kids

JetBlue and PBS KIDS are back with the Soar with Reading program.

The program makes literacy-based games and activities available to everyone (here’s a link to download a fun, free booklet) and donates thousands of books to kids who need them.

For each title of a favorite kid’s book you share, JetBlue will donate an age-appropriate book to a child in need (up toe $200,000 worth of books). Your suggestion also earns you an entry into a contest for two round-trip plane tickets and $2,000 worth of hotel vouchers, an iPad and a collection of books, or a PBS Kids prize pack.

Here’s page from the activity book, which should also be available on JetBlue flights

Travel contest: because you can’t win if you don’t play

Wish you were somewhere else this holiday weekend? The prizes in this contest include travel to some great places seated next to some very interesting people.
