Go ahead, toss a coin in a fountain at GSP Airport
Travelers love Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport’s (GSP) many fountains.
And people love to toss coins into the airport’s fountains.
So the airport has decided to launch a formal charitable program to put those coins to good use.
The airport’s new GSP Change for Good, program will gather up the coins and make donations to local nonprofit organizations.
To get the program going, $3,000 recently collected from GSP’s fountains is being donated to two area Salvation Army groups.
“Every year, millions of passengers and visitors pass through GSP, and many take a moment to toss a coin into one of our fountains,” said Kevin Howell, President and CEO of the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport District. “With GSP Change for Good, those small acts of generosity will help support organizations that are making a difference in our community.”
So next time you’re at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, go ahead, toss some coins into the fountain.
And, sure, make a wish!

No cigar – or any smokes – for Detroit Metro Airport

Like most U.S. aiports, the Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) has been smokefree for years.
But this week the airport authority canceled a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a cigar bar concession first announced in October, 2025.
The RFP was for a cigar lounge with an enclosed cigar-smoking area, as well as food service.
Health advocacy groups such as the American Nonsmokers’ Rights Foundation actively opposed the cigar lounge concept citing secondhand smoke risks for workers and passengers.
But airport officials cites economic uncertainty following the recent closure of Spirit Airlines as a key reason for the decision to cancel the RFP.
Just a few airports around the country have post-security spaces where passengers can smoke.
For example, Tampa International Airport (TPA) has smoking patios or ‘cages’ at each airside terminal and Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) in Las Vegas, welcomes smoking in some gaming lounges inside the terminal.
