We’re loving this new exhibition by artist Terry Maker that recently rolled into Denver International Airport (DEN).
The work is called ‘Cowgirl Hat Ball’ and it has two parts.
The larger sphere is made with more than 500 straw western hats attached to a wooden 10-foot diameter wooden structure.
The smaller version, which Maker calls Cowgirl Hat Ball – 2, is made with 175 miniature hats.

Here’s a cool view of the hats from inside the sphere.

In her statement about this work, Maker says that rather than naming the piece “Cowboy” Hat Ball, she chose “the unexpected, more feminine naming convention.” And that by turning turnng the hats inside out, “the work subtly shifts the visual hierarchy. The rounded contours take precedence while the traditionally dominant crown recedes into the background, inviting a reconsideration of familiar Western symbols.”
Look for this piece between now and January 30, 2027 at the B Gates, Near Gate B62, next time you’re passing through Denver International Airport (DEN). And take a look at the airport’s other art listings here.
