What’s faster? A car or an airplane? Changi Airport to find out.

Well, what is faster?  A car or an airplane?

No brainer, right?  Well, they’re going to test it out at Singapore Changi Airport.

To prep for the Changi GP Festival, on September 5th the airport is hosting the Changi Airport Race.

They’re billing it as the first-ever jetliner versus car race in Asia and it will pit a Porsche Carrera Cup race car against a Boeing 747 Jett8 aircraft.

Here’s a fast, fun promotional video for the contest:

Want to be there? Anyone who spends $30 (in one purchase) in the public areas of Terminals 1, 2 or 3 from now through August 23rd will be entered into a raffle to win one of 200 grandstand tickets. Another 500 people will win tickets to see the race live on a big screen in Terminal 3.

Sounds fun – and a little strange – but I’m curious to see what happens.

Dancing with luggage at San Diego Airport

Why pull your luggage behind you when you could dance with it instead?

SAN DANCING LUGGAGE

Today, August 18, 2009, between 11:00am -1:00pm, San Diego International Airport’s Performing Arts Program – known as ã brève – will present a free improvisational performance of Rolling Luggage by the San Diego Dance Theater.

Appropriately enough, the performance will take place in the airport’s Terminal 2 West baggage claim area.

Rolling Luggage is the work of choreographer Jean Isaacs.  The airport performance will depict eight travelers who, after claiming their luggage, begin to spin, swivel and “rock out” to music in the air.

I’m hoping they don’t announce the performance, but just sort of launch into it.  The look on the faces of  “just another Tuesday” travelers should be priceless.

Game playing at Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT)

I was poking around the Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) Web site looking for information about the new non-stop flights United Airlines has announced between PIT and LAX & PIT and SFO – and ended up taking a fun detour to the kids page.

PIT DINO

You should try it: on the games page you can try to put together a puzzle of a dinosaur in under two minutes.  (If you were at the airport you could see the 15 foot-tall, 30 foot-long model of a T-Rex skeleton, above, on the airside of the terminal, by the people-mover trains.)

PIT Coloring book

You can also print out an airport-themed coloring book, instructions for making a half dozen different paper airplanes, and test your ability to identify sounds heard at airports and airplanes.

PIT PLANE MODEL

There are more fun and games, for kids of all ages, at the FlyKids page on the Pittsburgh International Airport Web site.

You can even play these games if you’re stuck at Pittsburgh International Airport, because PIT is on the airports that offers free wireless Internet access.

Souvenir Sunday: Coconut Patties from Miami Int’l Airport

Every Sunday at Stuck at the Airport is Souvenir Sunday, when we feature fun stuff you can find at an airport for less than $10.

MIA COCONUT

This week we have Coconut Patties, those treats you find in pretty much every gift shop at Miami International Airport, and surely also for sale at airports throughout Florida.

I was familiar with the classic Coconut Patties. Office-mates who vacation in Florida usually bring home a few boxes and leave them in the lunchroom.

What I didn’t realize is that these treats come in so many flavors: Key Lime, almond, orange, and piña colada.

Have you found a fun under $10 and “of that city” souvenir at an airport? If so, please snap a photo and send it along.  Your souvenir may be featured on a future edition of Souvenir Sunday.
