More snaps from Incheon’s new Terminal 2

I’ve got a full review of the new Terminal 2 at Seoul’s Incheon Airport up on the Today in the Sky blog at USA TODAY, but sharing some more snaps from my visit here.

The terminal officially opened on January 18 – just a few weeks before 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games- and it’s a keeper.

Four airlines will use the terminal:  South Korea’s flag carrier Korean Air, Delta Air Lines, Air France and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.

Photovoltaic panels on the roof and natural greenery inside the terminal help keep the air fresh and lower heating and ventilation costs. A fleet of robots help passengers find their way.

Korean music and cultural performances are offered throughout the day and two Korean Traditional Cultural Experience Centers offer passengers the opportunity to try their hands at a Korean craft.

Beyond shopping and eating, there are activities to keep travelers entertained, including a large Kids Zone, the IT Experience Zone with VR soccer and flying (plus a coffee-making robot) and, in the transfer zone, a ‘digital gym’ that encourages jumping, stepping and other activites.

There’s also plenty of art and an observation deck with a cafe, views of the airfield and exhibits about the airport.

Outdoor movies – at the airport.

The amenities at Singapore’s Changi Airport, Hong Kong International Airport and the Incheon International Airport in Seoul include movie theaters.

But those are indoor movie theaters.

In what we hope will be a regular feature, last weekend Germany’s Düsseldorf International (which recently adopted a parking robot) offered visitors a chance to see an outdoor movie at the airport.

DUS MOVIE

The one-night cinema had seats for over 700 people and was set up on the airport’s outdoor observation deck.

On Saturday night the German comedy “Nicht mein Tag” was shown. On Sunday, it was James Bond in “Skyfall”.

Moviegoers had perfect outdoor moving-watching weather and, as a bonus, could see airplanes landing and taking off just behind the screen.

And, to make sure everyone could hear the soundtrack, wireless headphones were passed out.

Souvenir Sunday: South Korea’s Incheon Airport

This week’s Souvenir Sunday items come courtesy of Anna Williams, director at Seattle’s Perspectio, who recently spent some time at South Korea’s Incheon Airport.

She reports that between the shops, the cafes, the greenery and cultural street – which features cultural events such as Korean classical chamber music concerts and a recreation of the king and queen visiting the princess who was married to a noble class family – “I was impressed and entertained and educated by this airport and that says a lot!”

In addition to spotting this doll, she also spotted two cool cafes, one with a Hello Kitty theme – the other paying tribute to Charlie Brown.
