Souvenir Sunday: best airport souvenirs of 2010

London Airport souvenirs

Each Sunday here at Stuck at the Airport is Souvenir Sunday – a day to celebrate the fun, inexpensive and offbeat items you can find at airports.

Today we take a look back at the some of the best airport souvenirs featured this year; a reminder that there’s still time to do your holiday shopping at the airport.

At London’s Heathrow Airport these bus banks were adorable; London souvenirs

But I came home with several of these Beatles tote bags, although no one can convince me that’s Ringo.

At Boston Logan International Airport, I found lovely lobster hats – and a shop clerk willing to get her picture taken as a model:

At the new international terminal at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, I spent way too much time at the store entirely devoted to Hello Kitty:

And at Pittsburgh International Airport, I scooped up a (yummy) chocolate hockey puck:

Corny Cob – a big seller at the Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids – definitely makes the list in this year’s Souvenir Sunday favorites:

But my favorite airport souvenir remains the line of SUX souvenirs from the Sioux Gateway Airport:

Do you shop for souvenirs when you’re stuck at the airport?

If you find something that’s inexpensive (about $10), offbeat and “of” the city or region, please snap a photo and send it along.

If your souvenir is featured on Souvenir Sunday, you’ll receive a special airport souvenir.

Happy Souvenir Sunday from Des Moines International Airport

Each Sunday at StuckatTheAirport.com is Souvenir Sunday, when we take a look at some of the fun, inexpensive and offbeat souvenirs you can buy at airports.

This week’s souvenir comes to us from Twitter buddy, @Cassivella (Melissa Odom) who sent along a snapshot titled “Evil Corn” found for sale at Des Moines International Airport (DSM).

Bundled all together like that, I can see how they can look a bit evil.

But as we learned a while back from Pam Hinman at Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids, the 6-inch tall Corny Cobs (yes, they have a name) are big sellers.  And when on their own these little guys look, well, just corny, not evil.

Have you found a great souvenir while Stuck at The Airport? If it’s around $10, “of” the city or region and, ideally, a bit offbeat, please take a photo and send it along. It may end up featured on a future edition of Souvenir Sunday. And if it is, I’ll mail you a souvenir from StuckatTheAirport.com.

Souvenir Sunday: corny stuff from Des Moines International Airport

Each Sunday at Stuck at the Airport we take a look at some of the fun things for sale at airports that are under $10, “of” the city or region and, ideally a bit offbeat.

Usually I rule out shot glasses because they’re everywhere and just too easy to find. But we must make an exception this week for this shot glass, sent in by Stuck at the Airport fan Ken Rogers.

Des Moines - corn cob shot glass

Ken found this corny souvenir at the Des Moines International Airport (DSM) and was kind enough to send a photo along.

THANKS!

I was also willing to make an exception for this corny shot glass because it gave me the opportunity to bring back another fun Sunday Souvenir from Iowa:

IOWA Corny Cob

Corny Cob:  a 6-inch tall stuffed ear of corn that’s a best seller at Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids.

Have you found a great souvenir at the airport?  If it’s under $10, “of” the city or region and a wee bit offbeat, please take a photo and send it along.

It may be featured on a future edition of Souvenir Sunday!

It’s Souvenir Sunday: Meet Mr. Corny Cob from Eastern Iowa Airport

Happy Souvenir Sunday!

Each Sunday we take a moment to celebrate some of the fun, inexpensive, offbeat stuff you can buy when you’re stuck at the airport.

This week: meet Corny Cob. Or is that MR. Corny Cob?

According to Pam Hinman at the Eastern Iowa Airport (CID) in Cedar Rapids, the 6-inch tall “Corny” is a bestseller at the airport.

The airport also sells a lot of corn-themed T-shirts with corn-pone slogans such as “Not everything is flat in Iowa,” “What happens in the Cornfield stays in the Cornfield,” and “Got Corn?; ” but they cost more than $10 (our limit for Souvenir Sunday), so we’re just letting you know about that.

And, while poking around the Eastern Iowa Airport Web site, I noticed that the airport is also about to kick off a ticket give-away contest with Allegiant Air.  Two round-trip tickets anywhere Allegiant Air flies from Cedar Rapids will be given away at every University of Iowa Hawkeye football home game from now until November.

CID ANEMOMETER

To enter, you’ll need to guess what the wind speed range will be in Kinnick Stadium at kick off.  So, Hawkeye Fans, get out your anemometers.

Don’t have one? The folks at the Franklin Institute have kindly posted instructions on how to make your own anemometer out of paper cups and straws.

While you gather your supplies, here are the contest details.
