Award-winning domestic airports

Congratulations to Portland International Airport (PDX) which has been chosen best domestic airport in Condé Nast Traveler magazine’s annual poll of business travelers.

The poll ranks U.S. and international airports (as well as airlines and hotels) in several categories, including ease of connections, customs/baggage/, food/shops/amenities, comfort and design, and perceived safety and security.

Portland has won this accolade in four of the last five years. Other airports in the top three: Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C. and Tampa International Airport.

For a bit more information about the services and amenities at these airports, here are links to my USA TODAY guides:

And feel free to add your tips and comments about your favorite airport.

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport has world’s first airport library

Here’s a brilliant idea:

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport has partnered with the Dutch Public Libraries to open the world’s first airport library.  The library is just past passport control, on Holland Boulevard, and offers passengers waiting for a flight a place to read books in 29 different languages, listen to music, watch films and download material free of charge.

This from an airport that already offers travelers a great collection of art, a casino, a seafood bar, a chocolate bar, a fun forest for kids, a branch of the Rijksmuseum and lots more.

Schiphol opens world's first airport library

Her Royal Highness Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands was on hand for the opening of the Schiphol Airport Library on Holland Boulevard

Now… when we will have library branches in US airports?

Souvenir Sunday at Indianapolis International Airport

On Sundays we take a look at some of the inexpensive souvenirs you can pick up for around $10 when you’re stuck at the airport. This week, we’ve got some fun stuff to share from the Indianapolis International Airport (IND).

Of course, there’s the requisite candy ‘poop.’  Here, it’s Cardinal Poop, in honor of the state bird.

Marcella Gruelle created the Raggedy Ann doll in Indianapolis back in 1914, so you’ll find plenty of  Raggedy Anns and Andys for sale at the airport.  Only the tiniest sizes, and maybe the books, fit our $10 or under budget for Souvenir Sunday, but its fun to see the different-sized dolls all piled up and ready for new families.

There’s also the Just Pop In popcorn I featured yesterday on Snack Saturday, but it’s a fair bet that if you buy this as a souvenir, you’ll end up eating it all on the airplane.  Or before you get from the shop to your gate.

So consider doing some souvenir shopping at the airport spa. Yes, the spa.  IND is the only outpost for Erin Humphrey’s Enroute Spa and the spa is headquarters for a locally sustainable retail program Humphrey calls Hip and Handmade in Indy.  I had a chance to sit down and chat with Humphrey about the program and she told me how much fun she’s having scouring craft and DIY fairs in search of products to feature.

I’d already spotted these purses and Humphrey pointed out that they’re made by ReFind Originals, an Indiana company that turns reclaimed leather from everything from discarded old car seat covers to well-worn bomber jackets into purses and handbags.

The purse I had my eye on was over the $10 Souvenir Sunday limit, but the Enroute Spa also has this nicely smelling line of locally-made body care items with all natural ingredients. The blends have names such as Stress Relief, Immune Support, Elysia and Winter Magic and in addition to the $10 price tag on many of the containers, the selling point for me is the fact that body lotion also comes packaged in TSA-friendly solid sticks.

Have you found a great souvenir while you were Stuck at the Airport? If it’s $10 or under, “of” the city or region and, ideally a bit offbeat, please snap a photo and send it along.  Your souvenir may be featured on a future edition of Souvenir Sunday.

And, take a look at the growing list of airport profiles I’ve been working on for USATODAY.com.  The note at the top still says “the 25 busiest airports” – but the list is growing and will soon include short guides to 50 airports.  There’s a spot in each guide to add your comments and tips as well. Here’s a link to the USA TODAY Airport Guides.

Happy Souvenir Sunday from Southwest Florida Int’l Airport

Each Sunday here at StuckatTheAirport.com we take a look at some of the inexpensive souvenirs for sale at airports.  Our favorites are items that are under $10, “of” the city or region and, ideally, a bit offbeat.

This week the folks at Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers, Florida scoured their shops and sent along their favorite souvenirs: a tiny stuffed sea turtle (it looks like a frog, but you can sort of see a shell there in the background) and Fort Myers Pelican Poop candy.

Thanks!  (Some Sunday we’ll explore why every city has ‘poop’ candy…)

I’ve spent some time at Southwest Florida International Airport but in preparing a profile of RSW as part of the USA TODAY Airport Guides project, was pleased to learn about this lovely outdoor gazebo.

Have you found a great souvenir while you were stuck at the airport?  If your souvenir costs $10 or less, is “of” the city or region, and is a bit offbeat; please snap a photo and send it along.

It may end up featured on a future edition of Souvenir Sunday.

Dance your way to Singapore with “Where the Hell is Matt?”

Remember Matt Harding? He became a media sensation after posting YouTube videos of himself doing a goofy dance in spots around the world.

Well, he’s going to be in New York City – at Times Square – on Tuesday on March 30th, from noon – 5 pm, as part of the “Dance Your Way to Singapore Experience” promotion.  People will be invited to “dance badly” with Matt and to have their own dance videos posted directly to YouTube – Your Singapore.

The 20 most-viewed videos will be put up for a vote and the winner will get to go to Singapore and bring along a friend.

And when you go – because of course you’ll win – you’ll get to see one of my favorite airports: Singapore’s Changi Airport, which I profiled in What makes Singapore’s Changi so charming? for USA Today.

Are you game?

Bonus features on Oakland Int’l Airport website

Poke around on some airport websites and you’ll find some fun, surprising and educational stuff.

Case in point: the Oakland International Airport (OAK) site, which has a link to the Exploratorium’s instructions on how to fold a paper airplane, information about the Oakland Aviation Museum, which sits on the airport’s North Field,

and a great historical video about the history of the airport and its connections to Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart and other aviation pioneers.

You can watch the entire 20-minute video, or see bite-size segments of the film on the OAK website.

Happy Souvenir Sunday from: Vancouver International Airport

In February, Vancouver, B.C. will host the 2010 Winter Olympics Games and, as you might expect, everyone up there is pretty gosh darn excited.

That includes the folks at Vancouver International Airport (YVR). During the course of the winter games, the airport expects to host about 230,000 Olympics-bound passengers. On March 1, the day after the closing ceremonies – the airport expects a record 30,000 people to pass through the airport on their way home.

A lot of those travelers will be looking to take home an Olympics souvenir.  And the airport has made sure visitors won’t be disappointed: all sorts of Olympics-related items are for sale right there in the terminals.

In fact, the airport’s official Olympics souvenir shops have been open for about a year.

Our souvenir budget here at Stuck at the Airport is pretty slim. So we’re always on the look-out for items that are $10 or below.  This week, we had plenty to choose from.

The most popular Olympics souvenirs are pins. There are pins for pretty much everything, and pin-trading has been elevated to an unofficial sport.  So the airport has set aside a special area inside the terminal where travelers can gather to trade.

Clothing, toys, accessories, wallets, pens, etc.:  anything with one of the Olympics mascots on it seems to be popular.

Including this cute cold pack, which would come in handy in case of a sports injury.

But, so far, the most popular and hard-to-keep-in-stock 2010 Vancouver Olympics items are these red mittens.

More than million have been sold already and every time a new batch hits the stores, they’re snapped up in moments.  Proceeds from mitten sales go toward supporting Canadian athletes. And at $10 a pair, they’re our pick for Souvenir Sunday.

Have you found a great souvenir while you were stuck at the airport? If it’s under $10, “of” the city or region and, ideally, a bit offbeat, please snap a photo and send it along.

Your souvenir may be featured on a future Souvenir Sunday!

Free stopover guide – with coupons – for Munich Airport

Flying to or through Germany’s Munich Airport anytime soon? If so, be sure to download the free new stopover guide, which includes detailed information about all the airport amenities – from the “erotic boutique” and the Airbräu (the world’s first airport brewery) to the outdoor observation deck, the art exhibits, and the spas.

In addition to coupons for on-airport shops and restaurants, including free beer, wine, ice cream, and coffee (with very reasonable minimum purchases), the stopover guides offers discounts and information for tours in town.

Right now the airport is having its huge outdoor Christmas Market, complete with 300 fir trees, more than two dozen market stands, an ice-skating rink, live entertainment and visits from Santa.

As you might imagine, there were many more categories I would have loved to include in each airport profile, but the goal was to create useful, at-a-glance guides that USATODAY readers could use on the run.

Putting together the guides has been fun and a bit challenging. The challenging part has been that at airports these days, services and amenities, parking fees, etc. can change quickly. So a nice feature of these on-line guides is the comment section where travelers can share their own tips for each airport. I’ll have the opportunity to update the guides at least once a month, so many of those reader tips can get rolled into the profiles.

So please give the new USATODAY.com Airport Guides a look-see. Share a tip about your favorite airport. And let me know what airports you’d like to see added to the list!
