After a six-month vacation, the Mister Rogers exhibit at Pittsburgh International Airport is back in place at Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT).

Repaired, refurbished and now technologically up-to-date, the exhibit still includes one of Mister  Rogers’ signature sweaters, his sneakers, a miniature Neighborhood of Make Believe and clay models of the show’s characters, including King Friday and Henrietta Pussycat.

But now the exhibit also includes updated graphics and a video about the public television show, which was originally taped in Pittsburgh.

David Newell, better known as Mr. McFeely or “Speedy McFeely,” the postman on the Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood show, told me the exhibit is back just in time: Mister Rogers’ birthday is coming up and so is Sweater Day, March 20th.  On that day everyone is encouraged to wear a sweater – especially if they’re going to the airport.

You can see the refreshed Mr. Rogers’ exhibit on Concourse C at Pittsburgh International Airport, next to a children’s play area. Of course.

Starting on March 1, 2008 , passengers on US Airways will once again be able to get soft drinks, juice, coffee, and water for free.

US Airways has been charging $2 (in most cases) for these items since August 1, 2008. (First-class passengers and folks traveling on trans-Atlantic flights still received free drinks.)  And while lots of airlines are unbundling  fees, US Airways was the only airline charging passengers for non-alcoholic drinks.

Have a little Oscar fever?

Then check out the possible Academy Award-winners of the future on an airplane – or on-line – courtesy of Delta’s Fly-In Movies.

Five short film finalists were selected by programmers of the upcoming 2009 Tribeca Film Festival and will be shown, for free, from March 1 through April 12 on Delta Air Lines flights with personal, seatback in-flight entertainment systems (Delta on Demand).

Not flying anywhere between March 1 and April 12?

The films will also be on-line.

You can even vote your favorite film.

The five films include:

* “Cold Calls” by Jack Daniel Stanley: In this 80′s spoof, a woman receives increasingly bizarre phone solicitations from an obsessive telemarketer.
* “Eight Percent” by Alexander Poe: Two high school exes meet up ten years later on an awkward date.
* “Gerald’s Last Day” by Justin Rasch and Shel Rasch: Gerald the dog has been scheduled for his termination by the dog pound at 5 p.m. Can he seduce a potential adopter before his time runs out?
* “The Green Film” by Andrew Williamson: It’s not easy being green-especially when you’re a filmmaker. So how do you make the greenest movie of all time? Watch and learn.
* “Locks” by Ryan Coogler: Dante wears his hair in dreadlocks. When he goes to the local barbershop, we see into his heartbreaking home life and learn how big his heart is.

Air France gave it a test run last year and now Ryanair is going full speed ahead with in-flight cell-phone service.

Here’s a report from CNN about one of the first (press-heavy) flights.  Wish I’d been there just to see the cell-phone costume in person.

As you set out for weekend adventures…here’s a reminder to keep an eye on all your stuff at the airport. And another reason why carry-on only is a good option.   From the Portland Business Journal:

Two Northwest Airlines baggage handlers have been charged with stealing more than 200 items from passenger luggage at Portland International Airport…

The arrests are the result of a two-week investigation by Port of Portland police, which recovered 200 stolen items ranging from laptop computers and jewelry to hand bags and clothing, the port said.

Travelers who believe items were stolen from their baggage at PDX are asked to call port police at 503-460-4747.
