Travel Tidbits from PIT Airport

From art to bees, therapy dogs and the “refreshing” of some statues, Pittsburgh International Airport is keeping busy.

First up: a charming video to announce that the PIT Paws therapy dog team has joined others across the country hand out trading cards to fans.

PIT Airport also shared a video about the more than 700,000 bees that reside on property:

PIT airport said goodbye – temporarily – to the statues of George Washington and former Pittsburgh Steeler Franco Harris.

And the airport made room for a new – and somewhat large – piece of art.

Reno-Tahoe Int’l does Burning Man

Reno-Taho International Airport is helping ‘burners’ with their Burning Man experience.

The Burning Man festival is underway and Reno-Tahoe International Airport is part of the experience for the more than 18,000 “burners” who fly in and out of the area for the event.

Last week, the airport helped move things along on some of the busy arrival days by offering free group yoga, Burning Man artwork displays and therapy dogs dressed up for the occasion.

On Monday, when the burners start to go home, the airport will also offer entertainment and assistance, including big plastic bags for wrapping suitcases encrusted with dust from the Playa,  bins for disposing of all the garbage burners need to remove from the festival site and a drop-off spot for the bicycles many bring to get around the festival grounds. Those bikes get fixed up and donated to local groups.

Therapy ponies visit CVG airport

At first glance, I thought this was a joke.

But on second look, it’s real. And it makes sense.

In the spirit of the therapy dogs that are showing up at airports nationwide to ease the journey for travelers, earlier this week Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) invited a local farm to begin bringing some miniature-therapy horses to the airport.

It’s Kentucky Derby season, so for the first visit the horses showed up in the main terminal dressed in Derby attire.

They’ll be back – in ‘street clothes’ twice a month.

Denver International is the latest to join the pack of airports with a team of therapy dogs on duty to help relieve stress and anxiety for passengers.

Denver’s crew is called CATS – which stands for Canine Airport Therapy Squad – and each one of the dogs is registered with the Alliance of Therapy Dogs and is trained, certified and insured.

CATS dogs will be easy to spot: they’ll be wearing “Pet Me” vests.
