Souvenir Sunday

Souvenir Sunday: cash at Miami Int’l Airport

On Sundays Stuck at The Airport takes a look at the souvenirs you can pick up when you’re stuck at the airport. But here’s an example of a “souvenir” one traveler gave to Miami International Airport:

MIA CHECK

The photo shows a giant version of one of the checks a passenger had to pay Miami International Airport and the Miami -Dade Police Department – for $83,581 and $5,653 respectively – as civil violation fines for making false bomb threats in an airport last October.

According to MIA airport, the threats, which the passenger later said were jokes, shut down parts of MIA for hours, delayed flights and disrupted the travel plans of thousands of passengers.

This is the first time the airport has pursued restitutions for a false threat, but airport officials say it won’t be the last.

And in light of last week’s rash of airline bomb threats – there’s a good chance other airports – and airlines – will be following suit.

Souvenir Sunday: new airport trading card

It has a great name, it has a great art program , it has a fun play area for kids with a nursing room across the hall and a boot shop in with a nice line-up of other Texas-appropriate retail outlets.

And Dallas Love Field now has a collectible card in the growing North American Trading Card series.

Each airport usually keeps a stash of their cards at information booths in the terminals and the cards are often distributed during special events.

Here are few others that would be great to pick up during your travels:

Souvenir Sunday: bullish photo op at CLT

Sunday is Souvenir Sunday here at Stuck at The Airport – a day for taking a look at some of the fun, inexpensive items you can pick up when spending time at an airport.

CLTL Belt BUckle wall

This week’s pick comes from the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport (CLT), which now has a branch of Whisky River, the popular uptown Charlotte restaurant and sports bar owned by NASCAR’s Dale Earnhardt, Jr.

The airport location, Whisky River CLT, is located on Concourse E and, in addition to a belt buckle wall and a menu that includes Whisky Wings, fried pickles, burgers and BBQ brisket, sports a stage that will feature live music and a (stationary) mechanical bull for “you-did-that-in-an-airport?” photo ops.

Souvenir Sunday at Cleveland Hopkins Airport

It’s Souvenir Sunday – the day we take a moment to look at the fun, inexpensive, locally themed items you can find when you’re stuck at the airport.

This week’s treats come from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport , where they celebrate the Buckeyes with this cute bear –

And where passengers can pick up some squeezable bottles of regionally popular mustard:

Souvenir Sunday is a regular feature here at StuckatTheAirport.com, so if you spot a fun, locally-themed item for sale at an airport, please snap a photo of it and send it along. If your souvenir is featured, we’ll send you a cool travel-themed souvenir.

Souvenir Sunday: Kit Kats at Narita Airport

Narita Kit Kat

Welcome to Souvenir Sunday, the day we take a look at some of the fun, locally-themed and inexpensive items you can buy when you’re stuck at the airport.

This week: Kit Kats picked up on a very short layover at Tokyo’s Narita International Airport.

Wildly popular in Japan (where Nestle has a Kit Kat boutique), Kit Kats are available in dozens of unusual flavors in addition to the three – wasabi, hot Japanese chile and rum raisin – that we picked up at the airport.

Souvenir Sunday: travels with Jumbo

EPSON MFP image

Found this souvenir postcard of “Jumbo” – an animal produced by cross-breeding an American bison with beef cattle.

These days they call that a beefalo. But back in 1929, when Jumbo was born, he was dubbed a catalo.

According to the promotional blurb on the envelope sold with this postcard, catalo held the promise of being a larger, superior breed of livestock.

Among the advantages:

“Longer life span, resist T.B and Blackleg, dress a greater percent of higher-priced cuts of beef, bear valuable fur, and the cows give good, rich milk and require no shelter in very cold climate.”

To spread the word and raise money to develop the new breed, in 1935 L.C. Wilson of Colville, Washington hooked 1,200-pound Jumbo up to a covered wagon and together they visited 23 states and traveled over 10,000 miles around the country, traveling at the rate of 2 miles per hour and an average of 10 or 15 miles a day.

No word if Wilson’s wife identified went along for the ride.

It’s Souvenir Sunday – the day Stuck at the Airport takes a look at the fun, inexpensive and locally-themed treasures you can find when you’re stuck at the airport.

This week’s treat comes from George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), where we spotted this Hello Kitty doll wearing a cute little Texas Longhorns t-shirt.

The only thing cuter was this t-shirt designed for real dolls:

It’s Souvenir Sunday – a day to take a look at the fun, inexpensive and locally-themed items you can pick up when you’re Stuck at the Airport.

This week’s picks come from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, where the Cactus Candy seemed far easier to carry than the potted cactus.

Souvenir Sunday: bags made of Southwest Airlines seats

Southwest Airlines duffle

When Southwest Airlines did a cabin design that included, among other things, 80,000 lighter seats, they were left with 43 acres of leftover leather.

That leather ended up in Portland, Oregon with Looptworks, a company that takes high-quality excess material and upcycles it into limited edition, high-quality goods.

In this case, Looptworks has taken the leather from those old Southwest Airlines seats and turned it into a line of fashionable and functional bags that include a convertible tote ($150), a duffle ($225) and a backpack ($250). In addition to keeping the leather out of the garbage, the company partnered with a non-profit to employ disabled adults to deconstruct and clean the repurposed material.

The duffle and the tote are available on a 4 week turnaround time and Looptwork is about to launch the backpack and a toiletry bag.
