Souvenir Sunday

Souvenir Sunday at Milwaukee’s General Mitchel Int’l Airport

Happy Souvenir Sunday!

On Sunday here at Stuck at the Airport, we take a look at some of the fun, local, inexpensive and, ideally, somewhat offbeat things for sale at airports around the country.

This week, the folks at General Mitchell International Airport (MKE)  in Milwaukee, Wisconsin sent over some suggestions:

MKE jelly belly candy

First up: Jelly Belly candy.

Sure, these treats are are  for sale in lots of places, but you have a good excuse to buy ‘em here because the Jelly Belly Center – a candy warehouse with a factory tour – is in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, about a half hour away from the airport.

No time for the tour? Check out the on-line Jelly Bean Museum of Bean Art, which is filled with big, colorful jelly bean portraits of Elvis (three versions!), James Dean, Larry King, Laurel & Hardy, George Clooney, Marilyn Monroe, Princess Diana, Queen Elizabeth II, and others. The gallery also includes this jelly bean portrait of Amelia Earhart:

OK, back to Milwaukee’s Mitchell Airport and Souvenir Sunday…

Not a sweets fan? Well, cheese and beer are big in Milwaukee, so it makes sense that this Cheddar Beer Soup is for sale a the airport. The instructions seem simple enough: add water and beer!

So… thinking of doing a little shopping at MKE?

Keep in mind that in addition to a used book store – a rarity at an airport – MKE has a great aviation museum on site and, befitting the city that’s home to Harley Davidson, there’s free parking for motorcycles in the airport parking garage. (Four-wheeled vehicles get a good deal too: the airport offers $5 supersaver  parking.)

Have you found a great souvenir at an airport lately? If it’s under $10, “of” the city or region and, ideally a bit offbeat, snap a photo and send it along. It might show up in a future edition of Souvenir Sunday.

Souvenir Sunday: More great stuff from Auckland Airport

Happy Souvenir Sunday!  (Hope you didn’t eat too much Halloween candy last night..)

Every Sunday at Stuck at the Airport is Souvenir Sunday, when we take a look at some of the fun things you can buy at airports.  The rules: items must be under $10, “of” the city or region, and somewhat offbeat.

Last week, I shared some of the items I found at New Zealand’s Auckland Airport.

This week: more souvenirs from Auckland Airport.

Why? Well, it’s partly because I found so much great stuff there.

Also, to be honest, I finally finished unpacking and forgot that I’d bought these fun souvenirs too!

Auckland magnets

Cool, colorful magnets – from a set of a dozen I’m kicking myself for not buying….

Have you found something fun and offbeat for sale at an airport? If so, snap a photo and send it along. It may turn up someday on Souvenir Sunday.

Souvenir Sunday at Düsseldorf Airport

Happy Souvenir Sunday from Düsseldorf Airport!

Souvenir Sunday one

On Sundays we take a look at some of the fun things you can find when you’re stuck at the airport.  Our rules: the items must be under $10, “of” the city or region and, ideally, a bit offbeat.

This week: Germany’s Düsseldorf Airport, where these giant giraffes – they really are giant – in the center of the terminal greet travelers as an advertisement for a rental car company.

We almost took home this cute little dressed up doggy, but it was way over $10,

So instead picked up a few of these “wieners.”

Have you found a fun souvenir while stuck at the airport?  If you do, please snap a photo of it and send it along. It may be featured on a future edition of Souvenir Sunday.

Souvenir Sunday at Singapore’s Changi Airport

Singapore’s Changi Airport has more than 230 retail outlets, so picking just one item to feature this week for Souvenir Sunday was a real challenge.  As always, the goal was to find something for under $10, “of” the city, and a wee bit offbeat.

Luckily, the live frogs I found for sale by the bushel in town at one of the “wet markets” were not available out at the airport.

Live orchids, Singapore’s national flower, were available at the airport, but I wasn’t so sure I’d be allowed to bring a live plant through customs.

For just a second,  I considered an orchid-themed Beanie Baby (remember that craze?)

Changi beanies

But in the end I decided instead to grab some packages of local spices, mango pudding and popular Bah Kut The soup mixes – all very definitely “of” the city, and each under $10.

Have you found a great souvenir while being stuck at the airport?

If it’s under $10, “of” the city, and a wee bit offbeat, then please take a photo and send it along. It may be featured on a future edition of Souvenir Sunday here at StuckatTheAirport.com.

Souvenir Sunday: panda hats from PEK airport

Happy Souvenir Sunday!

Shopping is always a great way to spend some time when you’re stuck at an airport. You just never know what you’ll find.

That’s why here at Stuck at The Airport we celebrate Souvenir Sunday every week.

PEK - panda hats

This week: cute panda hats from China’s Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK). The photo is courtesy of Michael Crockatt (left), from Canada’s Ottawa International Airport Authority (left) and Carol Hutchins (right), from the Edmonton International Airport.

PEK LOGOPEK airport seems huge  – Terminal 3, which opened for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, is the second largest airport terminal in the world – but not boring.

According the airport Web site, an entertainment center at the airport offers:

“…Chinese tea ceremony, beauty saloon [I think they mean salon, but a beauty saloon seems intriguing],  hairdressers, foot care house and so on. …There is time-meter hotel in the first underground floor,  …You can also go to the cinema hall to enjoy the latest films or go to enjoy Chinese massage.”

All that sounds great, doesn’t it?

But this is Souvenir Sunday, so let’s celebrate those panda hats (and the brave models) and let me invite you to send along your photos of a fun souvenir you’ve found at the airport.

There are just a few rules: to be featured on Souvenir Sunday, an airport souvenir needs to be under $10, “of” a city or region and, if possible, just a wee bit offbeat.

Like those panda hats!
