Amelia the Avatar lands at Boston Logan International Airport

You may have encountered them at other airports and at healthcare, sports and entertainmnet venues.

But now Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) has installed a 9-member team of life-size AI avatar concierges to help passengers make their way through the airport.

Created in partnership with Proto Hologram and Holomedia AI, and designed to enhance, not replace, existing customer service teams, holographic “Amelia” avatars are now available at the airport offering assistance in in multiple languages.

According to Amelia inventors and the Massachusetts Port Authority, which runs Boston Logan, “the program represents a new standard in airport hospitality, combining the warmth of human interaction with the precision of AI.”

Amelia is “always on” and can help travelers find gates, restaurants, shops, lounges, and baggage claim locations.

In addition to maps, she also has access to real-time updates from the TSA.

And if she can’t answer a question, she can connect a traveler directly with a live customer service agent.

“Amelia represents the future of passenger engagement,” said Glenn E. Smith, Spatial Computing and Hologram XP, at Holomedia AI, “We designed her to meet travelers where they are, in their language, at their pace, helping them navigate the airport with confidence and ease.”

Mordner-day Amelia-like avatars has recenty been installed at JFK, LaGuardia, SFO, Muhammad Ali, Pittsburgh, Dayton, Jacksonville and more airports, as well as at the Delta Flight Museum in Georgia.

And this isn’t Boston Logan International Airport’s first time giving avatars a job.

Back in 2012, BOS experimented with a virtual assistant named Carla.
