Seed art on display at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport

A fun new exhibit on view at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) features a very Minnesotan art tradition: crop (or seed) art.

The seed‑crafted mosaics on display feature curated and award-winning selections from the more than 450 entries of crop art entered into the 2025 Minnesota State Fair Crop Art and Scarecrow Competition, which debuted in 1965.

According to the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis:

*The marvelous mosaics created from Minnesota seeds—from miniscule poppy seeds to massive pumpkin ovals—are simply seeds glued to a board. But these go far beyond mere landscapes and simple portraits. They have depth and personality. They depict celebrities and intricate scenes. They are often political. And hilarious.”

Designed to promote Minnesota agriculture, the competition requires artists to use only seeds and plant parts grown by Minnesota farmers to create their art pieces.

Find the crop art exhibit at MSP in the Terminal 1 G Colonnade Gallery through January 25, 2027.

And see the entries in the 2026 competition at this year’s Minnesota State Fair, which runs for 12 days from August 27 to September 7, 2026.
