Communities across the country are marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks that involved the hijacking of 4 airplanes and the deaths of 2,977 victims.
The anniverary will be marked with ceremonies, exhibitions, moments of silence and other many other remembrances, including the annual display of the Tribute in Light, at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in New York City.
The public art installation features two beams of light intended to evoke the memory of the Twin Towers. First displayed on the six-month anniversary of the 9/11 attack, it has appeared in the night sky each 9/11.
This year, ahead of the anniversary date, 2,977 drones recreated the Twin Towers at full scale, with each light representing a 9/11 victims as part of an artwork titled 2,977 Lights Over New York Harbor.
Airports & airlines around the country will also be marking the day
At Boston Logan International (BOS), the airport’s 9/11 Memorial, which sits outside Terminal A, will be rededicated on Sept. 11, 2026, at 11 a.m.
The permanent memorial, which has been open 24 hours a day, seven days a week since its dedication on September 9, 2008, honors the passengers and crews of American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175.
These were the two planes that departed Boston Logan for Los Angeles and then hijacked by terrorists who flew the planes into the World Trade Towers in New York.
Two flags that have been flying at Logan Airport also comemorate those planes and the passengers on them who perished.
One flag is on top of the jet bridge at Gates B32, where American Flight 11 departed from on September 11, 2001.
The other is on top of the jet bridge at C19, which is where United Flight 175 began its journey.
Both flights were hijacked.
American’s Flight 11 was flown into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. And United’s Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower.
Other airports will also be marking the day
Airports around the country, and elsewhere, will be marking the day with a variety of activities.
