Learn about lowrider bikes at San Francisco International Airport

The Stuck at the Airport art team is a big fan of the SFO Museum at San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

The accredited airport museum includes fourteen galleries that present a rotating schedule of art, history, photography, science, and cultural exhibitions, so there’s always something fresh and cool to see.

The newest SFO Museum exhibition is transportaton-themed and is all about lowrider bikes and their role in lowriding culture.

Lowrider Bikes: Familia y Cultura is located pre-security in SFO’s Dianne Feinstein International Terminal and is view through July 18, 2027.

“Far more than a style or pop-cultural phenomenon, lowriding is a way of life, a powerful movement that celebrates diverse cultures bound by community, family, strength, and tradition,” the exhibition notes tell us.

Here’s more from the SFO Museum about the role of lowrider bikes in the lowrider culture:

Bicycles have been integral to lowriding since the movement began in the late 1940s. Like their modern counterparts, early lowrider bicycles featured custom paint jobs, lowered seats, modified handlebars, and other parts and accessories that reflected the personalities of their builders.

While various bicycle makes and models have been customized over the years, Schwinn remains the preferred brand. Schwinn’s legacy was solidified in 1963 when they introduced the Sting-Ray, a small, sporty bicycle that has reigned supreme as the lowrider of choice. As customized Sting-Rays took to the streets, lowrider car shows also grew in popularity and featured bicycles in their own categories.

The lowrider bike exhibition at SFO includes fourteen impressive lowrider bikes made in Northern California from the mid-1990s to the early 2020s, along with images taken by photographers from the lowrider community.
