Wearable art on view at LA/Ontario International Airport

A new exhibition at LA/Ontario International Airport (ONT) features a fun collection of artist-made accessories, including hats, shoes, jewelry and purses by more than 40 national and international artists.

“Art 2 Wear: Accoutrements” is on display, post-security,  in four cases in Terminal 2 and in eight cases in Terminal 4 through September 23, 2009.

Here’s a preview:

Can that ash-alert for flights to Alaska

Alaska Airlines resumed flights in and out of Alaska today now that the ash from Mt. Redoubt has settled.

A big help: airplanes in Anchorage were wrapped in a protective plastic sealant overnight so that engines didn’t get damaged by abrasive ash particles.

No photos have been shared, so I have an image of an airplane wrapped in a giant plastic bag with a large twist-tie at the top. Or a huge zip-top bag, like the ones we stuff our toothpaste and face lotion into at the security checkpoint.

Is that how they did it?

Heathrow’s Terminal 5: Cloud

I finally had a chance to tour Heathrow’s Terminal 5.  And while I didn’t get a chance to dine at Wagamama or shop at Tiffany & Co., I did get a chance to see some of the great artwork that was commissioned for the building.  One of my favorites: CLOUD,  a digital sculpture by Troika made of (now) old-fashioned flip-dots, the technology once commonly used on schedule boards in airports and train stations.

Flights canceled due to volcano

Due to all the volcanic ash in the air caused by the eruption of Mt. Redoubt, Alaska Airlines today canceled flights in and out of the Alaska cities of Fairbanks, Bethel, Prudhoe Bay, Nome, Kotzebue and Barrow.

The airline is still operating flights south of Anchorage and throughout Southeast Alaska, but says that may change as all the routes get revaluated.

To find out about refunds and rebooking, be sure to contact the airline as soon as possible. You can also keep track of their updates on Twitter.

Sometimes, when airlines say a delay or cancellation is due to weather, we don’t believe it.  But I don’t think anyone can make a case against this ash-cancellation.

Who needs First Class seats?

Can’t afford First or Business class, but don’t want to fly in the economy cabin on your next flight?  Soon you’ll have a new option on Air France:

The airline is carving out a new cabin section, Premium Voyageur, between the Business and Economy cabins and putting in these swanky new fixed-shell seats:

The new section will have extra legroom and many of the amenities of the Business Class cabin. The meal service will be the same as  in Economy, though: aperitifs, champagne,  a choice of two hot meals, liqueurs, wines and, on flights over 12 hours long, mini-sandwiches and Häagen Dazs ice-cream.

The new cabin section comes with some Business Class perks at the airport as well: priority check-in desks, increased baggage weight allowance, and priority baggage delivery.

Can’t wait to try it out? The first available destinations will be New York-JFK, Tokyo and Osaka. For more details, see the Air France Website.
