(Tasty) Tidbits for Travelers at: JFK & Houston Airports

When you’re stuck at the airport, you can read, sleep, watch other passengers try to read or sleep, do some shopping and, of course, eat.  And for hungry travelers at the Houston airports there are two new options:

In Terminal C south at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), the Real Food Company has 11 serving stations “offering everything from a well seasoned steak, to jambalaya with jumbo shrimp, Chinese chicken salad and delicate pastries.”

IAH REAL FOOD

And William P. Hobby Airport (HOU)  is now home to the first airport branch of Buffalo Wild Wings, a popular sports bar known for its New York-style wings and its sauces.

HOU BUFFALO WILD WINGS

And, just as I’m getting ready to spend a whole day touring JFK airport, comes  this glowing article from the New York Daily News about all the great dining options there are now at this airport – including the Seafood Bar in Terminal 4, Bobby Van’s Steakhouse in the American Airlines Terminal 8, and the nine full-service restaurants at JetBlue’s Terminal 5.

Good thing I’ll be at the airport long enough to have several meals!

Have you eaten a meal – or three – at JFK lately? Please share your tips.

New Web site for Newark’s Terminal C lists sales and promotions

If you’ve got a long layover – or delay – at Newark Liberty’s Terminal C, which serves Continental Airlines, it’s now easy to find out what there is to do, where you can eat, and where the deals are.

EWR - Brooklyn Bar

At a new EWR  site, there’s an interactive map of the more than 35 restaurants and more than 45 shops, along with a page of sales and promotions. For example, most shops are participating in a rebate program that rewards shoppers with up to $75 in AMEX gift cards.

If you go, please look around for souvenirs. Each Sunday on Stuck at the Airport we feature fun, inexpensive souvenirs found at airports and we’d love to include something offbeat from EWR.

LAX hungry for Pink’s; ATL makes art accessible

Chile dog lovers alert.

No dogs have been sold and no firm opening date has been announced, but fans of Pink’s Hot Dogs are all atwitter over the fact that the legendary Hollywood eatery will be opening its first airport outlets at Los Angeles International Airport’s (LAX) Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) “later this year.”  Stay tuned.

LAX PINKS

Over at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), they’ve (finally) re-organized the Web site so it’s easier to find all the information about the art, culture and history exhibits scattered around the airport.

So now, before you even get to the airport, you can learn all about the juried exhibition of paper clothing on display in the Paper Runway exhibit in Gallery T :

and the replica 33-foot-long  Yangchuanosaurus skeleton in the Airport Atrium that’s on loan from the Fernbank Museum of Natural History;

Cheap airport eats: two-for-one meals at T.G.I. Friday’s

Many shops  and restaurant chains don’t extend their special sales and offers to their airport branches.

But the T.G.I. Friday’s chain does.  And through June 22, the chain is offering a buy-one-entrée-get-one-free coupon offer that’s good at all 18 of its airport branches.

You’ll need to print out the coupon and bring it with you, but you can keep printing out coupons each time you go.tgifjunebogocoupon

Here are the T.G.I Friday’s airport locations: Ontario, CA, Detroit, DFW – 6 locations, San Francisco, San Antonio, MSP, ATL, Tampa, Newark, Indianapolis, Islip, Tulsa, Pittsburgh

Cheap airport eats: $5 meals at LGA, PHL and a dozen other airports

“For a limited time only,” which could end up stretching throughout the summer, you’ll be able to get $5 meals at both Philadelphia International Airport and New York’s LaGuardia Airport.

6x6_register_cardBetween the two airports, there are 50 restaurants and food vendors participating in the WOW! $5 CHOW! promotion, which includes special offers for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

If your summer travel plans include either airport, I’d suggest printing out the list and tucking it into your carry-on.

Here’s a link to the participating restaurants at LaGuardia Airport and here’s a link to the participating restaurants at Philadelphia International Airport.

Also, keep in mind, that T.G.I. Friday’s, which has more than 18 airport branches, is offering full size portions of 16 salads and sandwiches for $5 through the month of May.  If you sign up for their Give me more Stripes program, you’ll also get other free stuff throughout the year. Stuck at Schiphol: Café Chocolat now open at Amsterdam Airport

Here’s just one more reason why Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is one of my favorite places in the world: in addition to a great airport-wide art collection, a wedding service program, a casino, great kids’ play areas, and the on-site Rijksmuseum Amsterdam Schiphol (and museum shop), the airport now has the Netherlands’ first Café Chocolat, serving everything from chocolate fondue and chocolate mousse to something called a ‘Golddigger:” a glass of champagne with golden chocolate pearls.

Eat at the airport: Chicago-based Argo Tea opens at ORD

Here’s another step in the right direction for food and beverage options at ORD: Argo Tea, a Chicago-based company specializing in natural teas, has opened its first airport outpost at O’Hare International Airport.

Like the dozen or so Argo Tea cafés in and around Chicago, the airport Argo Tea branch will offer teas, espresso drinks, loose-tea tea, and tea-ware as well as pastries, quiches, snacks and salads from its spot in Terminal 3, near gate H1.  ord-argo-tea

Tasty tidbits for air travelers

A couple of tasty tidbits for hungry, thirsty travelers:

Free drinks on JetBlue

JetBlue Airways is partnering with Stirrings (they make all-natural cocktail mixers) to give each passenger traveling on Sunday, February 1, a free cocktail.    They say it has something to do with football….

Good eats at the airport

The Luxaholics folks are making sure their readers are in the know about airports and air travel.

Last week they asked for my tips on making a coach seat more cushy and first-class-like.

This week, they’ve asked me to share a few tips on airport dining. I did my best, suggesting wine bars such as Vino Volo (various locations), the new One Flew South outpost at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), and a slew of others.  Moments after I sent along my tips (and walked out the door to the airport armed with a bag of leftovers from my fridge) this great article about airport dining by Matt Gross appeared in the New York Times.
