Vote and Fly at John Wayne Airport

Travelers heading out from John Wayne Airport (SNA) can be among the first to cast ballots in Orange County’s 2008 primary election. Between Sunday, May 18 and Tuesday, May 27, the Orange County Registrar of Voters will be offering early voting at the airport between 6 AM and 9 PM Monday through Saturday, and from 7 AM to 9 PM on Sundays. Voting booths will be located post-security in Terminal A, between the Sunglass Hut and Caterina’s, across from gate 9.

Marking milestones in Idaho and Florida

Horizon Air is celebrating 25 years of service to the airport in Boise, Idaho this week by inviting customers to play retro games – including “Are You Smarter Than An Airline Employee,” “Name That Tune” and “Let’s Make A Deal.” Prizes include a chance to win two round-trip tickets on Horizon.

And today – May 14th – the folks at Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers are celebrating the airport’s 25th anniversary by handing out furry silver weepuls to passengers.

Remember Robert Rauschenberg at Sea-Tac Airport

The art world is mourning the passing of Robert Rauschenberg, who died yesterday at age 82. He’s described in the New York Times as a “painter, photographer, printmaker, choreographer, onstage performer, set designer and, in later years, even a composer” who “defied the traditional idea that an artist stick to one medium or style”

Travelers flying through Seattle-Tacoma International Airport can pay their respects and see an example of Rauschenberg’s work at the “elbow” of Concourse C, just as you pass the Horizon gates and before you get to Gate C8.

The airport’s art collection includes Star Quarters, an intricate serigraph on mirror-coated Plexiglas.

Art for Airports: O’Hare Gets New Glass Mural

There’s a new piece of public art at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.

Inspired by the patterns of jet mist across a blue sky, Guy Kemper’s 50-foot long, 12-foot high, “Jet Trails” is made of hand-blown painted glass in soothing shades of blue, green and violet.

Kemper designed the mural to be “suggestive of many things related to flying-such as a kite, or the tail of an aircraft.”

See what you think: the mural is just past the south security checkpoint in Terminal 1.

How not to travel with kids

People leave a lot of unusual things behind at airports. Lost and Found offices have logged in everything from ash-filled urns to prosthetic limbs and entire car engines.

But kids?

According to Canwest News Service report, today “a family forgot their 18-month-old toddler after clearing security and boarded a flight to Winnipeg without him.”

An Air Canada spokesperson said the “child’s parents and grandparents were seated in different sections of an Air Canada flight from Vancouver to Winnipeg Monday, and each thought the child was with another family member.”

As you’ll see in the story, everything turned out fine and the family was reunited. But we can all imagine a different ending.

So next time your family is at the airport, take frequent head counts and put a copy of the itinerary in everyone’s pocket.
