IND Airport or INDY 500?

Throughout May, Indianapolis International Airport is helping celebrate the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 with audio installations that include the traditional call to “start your engines,” the sounds of revving engines and Jim Nabors’ final performance of “Back Home Again in Indiana.

Through June, two art exhibits in the ticket hall at IND airport celebrate the 100th Indy 500 as well:

One exhibition features work by two of the 33 artists commissioned by the Arts Council of Indianapolis to create their interpretations of the “Welcome Race Fans” signs that appear throughout the city during May. A video running above the escalators leading down to the baggage claim is showing a video featuring the work of all 33 artists.

Denver Airport Super Bowl ready

Denver Broncos Statue

Football fan or not, if you’re traveling through Denver International Airport this week, you’ll know that the town is rooting for the Denver Broncos to win Super Bowl 50.

Take a look at the amenities that have popped up and how the terminals have taken on an orange hue.

Denver Broncos lounge

The Great Hall in the center of the Jeppesen Terminal on level 5 has been decked out with Broncos-colored lounge furniture. “The Broncos Experience Zone” also includes a life-sized cutout of Broncos mascot, Miles, and a giant image of the airport’s famous blue “Mustang” for passengers to take photos with.

Everyone loves puppies, so DEN airport is hosting its own DEN Puppy Bowl from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Friday in the center of the Jeppesen Terminal on level 5.

There’s more… the announcement on the train between concourses has been changed. Now you’ll hear a pro-Broncos message from Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock. And, at the information booths on all three concourses, DEN staff will be handing out a variety of Bronco-orange products today through Sunday. Head there for Orange Crush soda, oranges, orange candy, beads, buttons and more.

Bay area airports gear up for Super Bowl 50

Mineta San Jose International Airport ready for Super Bowl 50 fans_edited

No matter which teams end up playing in Super Bowl 50 on February 7 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA, airports in the Bay Area are ready for all those sports fans to arrive – and depart.

Here’s what some of the area airports have in store:

Officials at San Francisco International Airport are gearing up for a steady stream of arriving traffic in the days leading up to the Super Bowl and for a big crush of travelers on the Monday following the game.

“For the departure activity, we’re working with the TSA and airlines to open ticket counters and security checkpoints much earlier than usual,” said airport spokesman Doug Yakel, “and many airlines are actually planning to remain open 24 hours from Sunday into Monday to keep customers moving.”

The “5-4-3-2-1” campaign, should help move things along on departure day. The campaign encourages travelers to check out of their hotels 5 hours before their scheduled departure flight, to return their rental cars 4 hours before their flights and to check in at their airline ticket counters 3 hours before their flights. SFO is urging Super Bowl fans to get through the security checkpoints at least 2 hours before their flights and be waiting at their departure gates a least an hour before the scheduled departure time.

Other airports in the area are promoting the 5-4-3-2-1 campaign as well.

SFO MUSEUM FOOTBALL HELMET

That means, of course, that a lot of passengers may be spending more time than usual at the airport and SFO is ready for that with an exhibit of artifacts from the NFL Hall of Fame (in Terminal 3) and a planned program of live music in all the terminals.

SFO has also set aside 150 parking spaces for private and corporate aircraft activity.

Pop-up Super Bowl shop at Oakland International Airport_edited

Oakland International Airport already has a pop-up shop selling Super Bowl memorabilia inside the terminal and is bracing for full flights during the week of the Super Bowl but, right now, has no additional commercial game-related flights scheduled for that week.

“What we are anticipating is an increase in corporate flights and are expecting to have the most private jet activity in the region, given that we have the most physical space for aircraft parking,” said OAK spokesperson Keonnis Taylor.

Mineta San Jose International Airport, “the gateway to The Big Game,” has spent months been planning for a significant increase in Super Bowl 50-related travelers and aircraft, including the arrival of the two Super Bowl team planes, currently scheduled on Sunday, January 31, and up to 10 commercial-sized aircraft transporting NFL family and friends, which are likely to land on February 4, said SJC spokeswoman Rosemary Barnes.
Some airlines will likely add commercial flights to accommodate increased demand, once the two teams playing have been decided, but SJC is also planning to accommodate what may be up to 150 private aircraft.

Passengers will find super-sized NFL graphics inside and outside of the terminals and in the Rental Car center, an increased presence by the San Jose Police Department and extended TSA checkpoint hours and personnel on Game Night through Tuesday after the game.

A helpful Game Week Travel page on the SJC website offers everything from tips on ground transportation options to a reminder from the TSA to pack Super Bowl 50 souvenir program in carry-ons only, “due to the program’s hologram feature.”

More than one million people are expected to attend the week-long festivities in the San Francisco Bay Area leading up to Super Bowl 50 on February 7, 2016, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

In preparation, the SFO Museum at San Francisco International Airport is hosting a football-themed exhibition featuring memorabilia and game-worn artifacts from each of the league’s thirty-two franchises, with most items on special loan from the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Among the objects on display are items belonging to Hall of Famers – including Joe Montana’s home jersey, Walter Payton’s helmet and Jim Brown’s shoulder pads.

Souvenir Sunday at LAX

Each Sunday, Stuck at The Airport takes a look at some of the fun, inexpensive and locally-themed items you can buy when you’re stuck at the airport.

This week’s treat comes from Los Angeles International Airport, where we spotted this great selection of Los Angeles Dodgers gear – a reminder that airports are usually a great place to purchase sports-themed souvenirs from a variety of local teams.

Play ball!

LA DODGERS

Seeking souvenirs….

We’re seeking more snaps of some of the inexpensive, locally-themed and, ideally, a bit offbeat, souvenirs you can buy at airports. So please take a photo of something you spot (or actually buy) next time you’re stuck at the airport.

If your souvenir is featured here on Souvenir Sunday, we’ll send you a special travel-themed souvenir as a thank-you.

Tennis courts coming to Munich Airport

Tennis im MAC

The large outdoor plaza between Terminals 1 and 2 at Munich Airport hosts events ranging from wave-pool surfing and beach volleyball (on a beach made of trucked-in sand) in the summer to a traditional Christmas Market in the winter.

Also on the agenda: tennis.

From April 1 to 20, two tennis courts will be set up in the plaza offering tennis camps for kids, open court time for adults and a chance to watch ranked tennis players compete in matches.

The tennis courts are being set up as an advertisement of sorts for the upcoming tennis tournament known as the BMW Open by FWU AG but that just seems like a great excuse to offer up fun and surprising amenity at the airport.

Fore! Virtual golf at MSP airport

It’s been tried in the past at airports in the U.S. and elsewhere. Now Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport is giving virtual golf another try.

This time it may just work!

PGA golf

Scheduled to open mid-March, the airport’s “golf lifestyle facility” will offer golfing activities and a lounge, along with retail, food and beverage.

A joint project of PGA of America and Twin Cities-based Wexford Golf, the facility promises golfers simulators loaded wit the world’s top golf courses, instructions from PGA Professionals, a practice green, a virtual driving range and a shop offering custom fit clubs and a wide range of merchandise.

PGA MSP

There will also be a restauraunt: Champion’s Grille by Ike’s Food and Cocktail (operated HMSHost).

PGA MSP will be located in Terminal 1, just past security at the north end of the MSP Airport Mall, but plans are in place for day passes to be available for non-flying golfers.

What will it cost?

Entry to the golf lounge – which includes access to the putting green and “business-class” Wi-Fi is $10.

The golf simulator will cost $30 for a half hour and $50 for a full hour. A visit to the virtual driving range will be $20 for 15 minutes, $25 for 30 minutes and $35 for an hour. Golf lessons begin at $15 for a 15 minute tune-up.

Russell Wilson’s Fan Flight II on Alaska Airlines

Fan Flight jacket

Everyone in Seattle is pretty worked up about the Seahawks return to the Super Bowl. So it was no surprise that more than 80,000 Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan members from Oregon, Washington and Alaska (20 percent more than last year) entered a contest to win a spot on a special charter flight to Phoenix for a Super Bowl party on February 1. MVP Gold members could also bid miles – which would be donated to Children’s Hospital in Seattle.

The 56 contest winners – and their guests – along with 6 top mileage bidders (who bid a total of 2.2 million miles!) – enjoyed an inflight tailgate party to Phoenix and will be cheering on Russell Wilson, Alaska’s ‘Chief Football Officer’, and his team Sunday evening.

Here are some photos from the flight.

Airlines add flights for Super Bowl fans

Russell Wilson plane

Trying to find a flight to Phoenix, Arizona that will get you there in time for Super Bowl XLIX on February 1st?

Don’t give up.

Many regularly-scheduled flights are already sold-out, but airlines are adding special flights to their schedules to help fans get to the game.

Alaska Airlines has added two extra round-trip flights between Seattle and Phoenix; one on January 30th, the other on February 2nd.

The airline is also hosting Russell Wilson’s Fan Flight II: 56 lucky contest winners will be able to take a friend on a special flight from Seattle to Phoenix to attend a Super Bowl party. To enter you’ll need to be an Alaska Airlines’ Mileage Plan member and be a resident of Oregon, Washington or Alaska.

United Airlines is adding flights – 55 in all – from its hubs in Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark and San Francisco and adding nonstop service – from Jan.29 to Feb. 2 – from Boston and Seattle to Phoenix.

Delta Air Lines is adding service between Phoenix and Boston, Los Angeles and Seattle for Super Bowl fans.

JetBlue is adding a flight from Boston to Phoenix on January 30th and a return flight on February 2nd.

Southwest Airlines is adding both nonstop and connecting flights between Seattle and Phoenix Sky Harbor and between Boston and Manchester (New Hampshire) and Phoenix between January 29 and February 2.

US Airways is adding extra flights as well.
