It’s Souvenir Sunday here on Stuck at The Airport and it’s big week for space buffs as celebrations get underway to mark the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing.

Airport and airport shops are celebrating as well.

OpenBook at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) and Book People at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) sent along some snaps of the space-themed books and gifts that have been flying off their shelves.

Souvenir Sunday – in Vienna

It’s Souvenir Sunday, the day StuckatTheAirport.com usually looks at fun, inexpensive, locally-themed items you can buy at airports.

But..because I’ve spent the week on a river – the Danube River – on board a Viking River Cruise, this week’s souvenirs come from one of our stops.

In Vienna, the chef for the cruise toured a group of about 15 passengers through a downtown market where stalls were filled with everything from fish and wine and olives to every spice you can imagine

We got to see everything, of course, but also had an opportunity to do some tastings.

Then it was time to shop. Pretty much every stall had small and large packets of nuts, spices and dried fruit for sale. But I only found one shop that this wide and very colorful assortment of sardines – all priced at below $8.

Souvenir Sunday at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport

It’s Souvenir Sunday, a day to take a look at some of the fun, inexpensive and locally-themed items you can buy at airports.

You can’t go wrong with one of these colorful souvenirs from Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport. Flowers – fresh, wooden, plastic or ‘future’ (as in bags of bulbs) – all look appealing.

And none of these souvenirs is anywhere near expensive.

And then of course, there’s cheese, stroopwafels and chocolate.

British Airways’ souvenir marmite

British Airways has teamed up with Marmite to sell souvenir-sized jars of the popular-in-some-places breakfast spread made with brewer’s yeast.

The airline discovered that airport security officials at London City AIrport confiscate jars of Marmite more than any other branded item and that more than 2000 jars of Marmite are expected to be taken from travelers this year.

To make sure Marmite-lovers won’t go hungry when they travel – and because British Airways is having fun celebrating its centenary year – the the carrier is selling souvenir-sized jars of Marmite to its passengers.

For now, 70 gram, travel-friendly special edition jars of the spread are being sold exclusively on board.

Don’t fancy Marmite? Don’t worry.

British Airways will be releasing a series of other centenary edition foods in partnership with British brands during its milestone year.

The airline has a partnership with Scottish craft brewers, BrewDog, who have created a transatlantic IPA for customes and has a deal with luxury British watchmaker Bremont for a limited-editiod watch made with metal from the Concorde.

Souvenir Sunday: island bread from the Honolulu airport

It’s Souvenir Sunday, a day to take a look at unique, locally-themed gifts you can buy when you’re stuck at the airport.

This week’s treats: Coconut Pineapple and Guava Bread from Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.

The breads, now on sale in some shops at the airport, started as a treat baked up by HMSHost and offered in employee cafe.

Pilots and flights crews began snapping up loaves to take to the mainland and eventually HMSHost – which operates many shops at HNL and other airports about the country – decided to make the bread available to travelers as well.

Now Makai Plantation and The Local in the Garden View Food Court (C-Gates area) sell the homemade  Coconut Pineapple and Guava Breads.

Other treats to find a HNL airport include fresh flower leis, hula girl ornaments, Spam-flavored macadamia nuts, and ukeleles.

Leis are everywhere at the airport. Even on the sign for the women’s restrooms.
