OmniGlobe lands at Dallas Love Field

DAL GLOBE 1

You may not be able to use it to see Pluto – just yet – but an OmniGlobe now on loan to Dallas Love Field airport will let you tune in more than 180 different interactive spherical displays depicting everything from the planets to the Earth’s wind current patterns, the land mass movement from 600 million years ago and the image of a Death Star from Star Wars.

Science museums and universities sometimes have OmniGlobes on site, but this is the first time that one of these globes has been placed in an airport.

DAL GLOBE 2

The exhibition will be up through October in the Art/Travelers Art Gallery located post-security at Dallas Love Field.

Here’s what an OmniGlobe looks like in action:

Souvenir Sunday: new airport trading card

It has a great name, it has a great art program , it has a fun play area for kids with a nursing room across the hall and a boot shop in with a nice line-up of other Texas-appropriate retail outlets.

And Dallas Love Field now has a collectible card in the growing North American Trading Card series.

Each airport usually keeps a stash of their cards at information booths in the terminals and the cards are often distributed during special events.

Here are few others that would be great to pick up during your travels:

Dallas Love Field gets a piece of Dallas history

LOVE FIELD stained glass

The impressive art-collection at Dallas Love Field Airport gets larger with the addition of an important stained glass window rescued from the demolition of an East Dallas church in the summer of 2013.

According to the Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs, the window is part of a historically-significant work by Dallas artist and teacher Octavio Medellin and was one of four installed in a local church in 1960.

The church was demolished to build a YMCA but the four of the blue and turquoise stained glass panels were restored and reconstructed.

Now one of the restored windows – the one that was in the bell tower – will have a home in four windows above the Ticketing Hall at Dallas Love Field. Installation begins this week and should be complete by mid-April.

May I take my pony on the plane?

The TSA has a handy “Can I bring my … through the security checkpoint” tool on its website which makes it clear that ice hockey sticks, field hockey sticks and “sports equipment that can be used as a bludgeon (such as bats and clubs) is prohibited in the cabin of the plane and must be transported in your checked baggage.”

But what about the stick ponies I spotted being sold in at least three shops at Dallas Love Field?

During my three hours hanging out at DAL earlier this week I didn’t see any small children (or adults) throwing tantrums for being relieved of their ponies at the aircraft doors, so I assume traveling with stick ponies is just fine.

But I’m still scouring the TSA app and will ask for a formal ruling…
