Tidbits for travelers: news from JAX, PHL, and ATL

On Valentine’s Day, volunteers at Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) handed out 1700 red and white carnations to arriving and departing passengers.

On Tuesday (February 16, 2010) Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) had a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new Terminal E expansion, which includes seven gates for Southwest Airlines and several new food and retail outlets, including a news/gift shop, a McDonalds, and a sit-down restaurant called Cantina Laredo.  The new expansion also brings new artwork to the airport, courtesy of Philadelphia’s Percent for Art Program. And congratulations to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL): it’s Paper Runway exhibit of wearable paper clothing and accessories made with everything from banana leaf fibers to recycled cotton rags and coffee filters, won an award from the Georgia Association of Museums and Galleries.

Look for “Paper Runway” in the cases in the walkway connecting the main security area and Concourse T.  But hurry: the exhibit will only be there through March.

Denver Airport hosts exhibit about Denver Health

This year, while Denver International Airport (DEN) turns 15, Denver Health is celebrating its 150th year of service to the community.

To mark the occasion, the airport is hosting an exhibit about the history of the health care organization in the A Gates Mezzanine Gallery and in the C Gates Center Core.

Historical photographs dating back to the 1930’s are on display, along with artifacts, and memorabilia. And for those who can’t make it to the airport before the end of April, 2010, there’s this short video of the Denver Health Art Exhibit, which gives a nice overview of the items on display.

Tidbits for travelers: an in-flight Wi-Fi contest and a free hotel night

I’m a firm believer in that corny saying, “You can’t win if you don’t play.”  Works on many levels.

One example: contests and giveaways.

So here’s some information about an in-flight Wi-Fi contest and a hotel bounce-back offer to check out as you dig out of the snow and head out on the road this week:

Through the end of February, Gogo Inflight  Internet is offering  the on-line  Great Gogo Race.  Prizes include a free Gogo session or discounts for 25% or 50% off  inflight sessions.  Everyone wins something, and when you use your code on a Gogo-equipped AirTran Airways, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, or United Airlines airplane you’ll also get entered into that day’s drawing for a netbook.  End 2/28/10.

Red Roof Inn also has a few special offers rights now.  If you stay two weekend nights in February, you’ll get a voucher for  a free night (Sunday – Thursday) that can be used from March 1 – May 31, 2010.  The chain gives year-round discounts to teachers and, through April, is giving guests of many Red Roof Inns in Georgia, Ohio, and Florida, coupons good for Burger King breakfast sandwiches as well.

Happy Souvenir Sunday from Denver International Airport

Airlines canceled thousands of flights this week way ahead of the snow, but a lot of people still spent a lot of time stuck at the airport.

Some travelers fumed, others took it in stride. And a lot of folks at Denver International Airport used their time to check out the art.

Denver airport’s art collection includes  26 site specific murals, sculptures and installations, as well as exhibit spaces that feature changing exhibitions.

Even better: the airport has a glossy brochure that offers a self-guided tour of all the artwork.

Here at StuckatTheAirport.com we’re big fans of free, and because the brochure is so helpful – and free! – we’re choosing it as our Souvenir Sunday pick for this week.

Have you found a great souvenir while being stuck at the airport? If its’ under $10, “of” the city or region and, ideally, a bit offbeat, please snap a photo and send it along.  Your souvenir may be featured on Souvenir Sunday.

Oh – and Happy Valentine’s Day!  If you see someone proposing at the airport, please snap a photo, get the details and let us know about that too!

Singapore’s Changi Airport celebrates Year of the Tiger

The Chinese New Year will be celebrated this Sunday and Singapore’s Changi Airport is ready with giant displays to welcome in the Year of the Tiger:

Changi Airport also opened up an Aviation Gallery in Terminal 2, with loads of information stations, interactive kiosks, and 600 tiny airplanes hanging from the ceiling.

Here’s a “please-touch” fire-fighting suit worn by airport emergency officers:

And here’s a bench in the Changi Aviation Gallery that doubles as a scale to show how airports tally up the weight of baggage.
