New art exhibit at Philadelphia Int’l Airport uses nails and thread

The newest exhibition at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is Kim Kamens’ Photobooth.

Instead of using paint, pen or pencils, Kamens uses carpenter nails and sewing thread to make her art.

PHL KAMENS DETAIL

PHL Director of Exhibitions, Leah Douglas, says:

Kamens’ carefully orchestrated methodology is analogous to drawing as the linear quality of the thread wound from point to point creates the illusion of a highly rendered line drawing. She is able to control the density of the thread by the number of times she connects specific points. The more she repeatedly winds the thread back and forth from one nail to another, the denser these areas become; creating darker shadows and greater depth.

Amazingly, out of the hundreds of nail heads and miles of thread a recognizable image emerges.

Photobooth will be on display through April 2010 in Terminal B (post security) at Philadelphia International Airport

Souvenir Sunday at Düsseldorf Airport

Happy Souvenir Sunday from Düsseldorf Airport!

Souvenir Sunday one

On Sundays we take a look at some of the fun things you can find when you’re stuck at the airport.  Our rules: the items must be under $10, “of” the city or region and, ideally, a bit offbeat.

This week: Germany’s Düsseldorf Airport, where these giant giraffes – they really are giant – in the center of the terminal greet travelers as an advertisement for a rental car company.

We almost took home this cute little dressed up doggy, but it was way over $10,

So instead picked up a few of these “wieners.”

Have you found a fun souvenir while stuck at the airport?  If you do, please snap a photo of it and send it along. It may be featured on a future edition of Souvenir Sunday.

Changi Airport celebrates Deepavali with flowers

Deepavali – or The Festival of Lights – is celebrated by Hindus worldwide to mark the victory of good over evil.

To commemorate the holiday, you’ll find more than a dozen live garden displays and floral sculptures throughout Singapore’s Changi Airport through October 25th.

Here’s a sample of the installations:

There are seven displays in the Departure Transit Malls and five in the Departure Hall Public Areas .

Air New Zealand Matchmaking Party – kisses all around

Last night, acting, looking, and in a few cases smelling like a bunch of junior high kids embarking on their first prom, about a hundred of the Americans who flew to Auckland on Air New Zealand’s Matchmaking Flight joined 150 nattily-dressed Kiwis for the Great Matchmaking Party.  As billed, it was a night of inter-hemisphere mingling, complete with dating games and dance performances, including a repeat of this choreographed dance the flight crew performed in the holding gate at LAX airport.

Were matches made?  You bet. Were lives changed? Time will tell… but at least everyone has a great story.

Signature Art at Raleigh-Durham International Airport

Last year, when North Carolina’s Raleigh-Durham International Airport had an open house to let the public see the new Terminal 2 building, they asked everyone who stopped by to sign their name to a sheet of paper.  Artist Dunne Dittman later took those signatures and turned them into a piece of art – Signature Art – by scanning each name and having it etched into a piece of 6 ft. by 4 ft sea foam glass,

RDU SIGNATURES

The work was unveiled last Friday at RDU’s annual Customer Appreciation Day and is now in its permanent home in the window front of the Heritage Room in the Terminal 2 ticketing lobby.

There’s lot more art at RDU: take a look.
