Fool at the pool. Don’t be that person.

If you’re lucky enough to go somewhere this summer, even if it’s just to an airport hotel, chances are there will be a pool in the picture. Summer

Do you know what to do when you’re there? It seems like a lot of folks don’t.

That’s why my Well-Mannered Traveler column on MSNBC.com this week is titled: Don’t be the fool at the pool.   You can read the full column on MSNBC.com (and vote on what you think is the most annoying pool behavior) but here’s an excerpt.

As they check into and out of hotels in the course of taking notes for their assigned site visits, staff members of the recently launched site, Oyster Hotel Reviews, take a lot of pictures. Some photos confirm that a hotel’s king-size beds are as plush and as large as advertised. Others, like the shot taken at the Sheraton Manhattan Hotel (below), might make guests think twice before taking a dip in the pool.

Ick, right? Do people really need to be told not to poo, pee, spit, or blow their nose in a hotel pool? Evidently they do. And, looking over the results of a recent TripAdvisor survey, it’s clear that there’s an ocean’s worth of other travelers out there who could use some tips on what sort of behavior is acceptable, or not, at the pool.

Travelers told TripAdvisor that loud music, hogging beach chairs, and urinating in the pool were some of the activities they found most annoying. Although 53 percent of the almost 4,000 people surveyed admitted they thought it was OK to pee in the ocean as long as other swimmers weren’t too close by. Other irritating behaviors high on the list included smoking, littering, not showering before entering a pool and letting kids take other kids’ beach or pool toys without asking.

Bad manners, right?

There’s more:

In some places, it’s PDA, public displays of affection. At the Vero Beach Hotel & Spa in Vero Beach, Fla., the pool concierge (yes, that’s a job) says he keeps an eye peeled for couples getting a little too cozy by the pool and, when necessary, steps-in and asks them to tone it down. “Usually it starts out subtle,” says Alex Serkadakis, “but then after a few drinks, they can get a little too frisky. Rubbing suntan lotion on their partner’s back can turn into a seductive massage and then next thing you know, they are rubbing oil all over each other.”

Serkadakis says kids love putting stuff like fish, turtles, etc. into pools, but sometimes people want stuff taken out of the water. Like all the water.

Erin Scheinost, the manager at the Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak’s River Ranch in Phoenix had one mom who demanded that the resort’s 4-acre water park be drained because her 12 year-old son had lost his retainer in the lazy river section of the park. Scheinost couldn’t do that. Nor could she call the woman if her son’s retainer popped up. “My staff finds a lot of retainers and we have no way of identifying the owners.”

LAX hungry for Pink’s; ATL makes art accessible

Chile dog lovers alert.

No dogs have been sold and no firm opening date has been announced, but fans of Pink’s Hot Dogs are all atwitter over the fact that the legendary Hollywood eatery will be opening its first airport outlets at Los Angeles International Airport’s (LAX) Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) “later this year.”  Stay tuned.

LAX PINKS

Over at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), they’ve (finally) re-organized the Web site so it’s easier to find all the information about the art, culture and history exhibits scattered around the airport.

So now, before you even get to the airport, you can learn all about the juried exhibition of paper clothing on display in the Paper Runway exhibit in Gallery T :

Free ride over at BWI airport

BWI parking garage

For years, a nice perk at Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) has been free 30-minute short-term parking. It meant you could drive someone to the airport and, instead of rushing them out of the car at the curb, you could park, help carry in their suitcase, and walk your friend or family member to the terminal.  The perk also worked in your favor if you were picking someone up at the airport, if their flight was on-time.

You can still do that, of course. But those first 30 minutes of parking at BWI airport are no longer free. Now it will cost you $2.

BWI parking garage 2

Why the change? With the downturn in travel, airports everywhere are looking around for new ways to earn money.  BWI figures it can make $500,000 a year from charging for the short term parking. (There’s more information about BWI’s decision in the Baltimore Sun.)

While some small airports still offer free short term parking (and a few really small airports offer free parking all the time), most large airports don’t offer any sort of free short term parking anymore.

Unless you count the cell-phone lots where, for now, the parking does seem to be free.  But who wants to lay odds on which airport will be the first to start charging for that?

Do you know of an airport that still offers free short term parking?  If so, please leave a comment below.

Undies unveiled at JFK airport

Stuck at JFK?  Now you can while away the hours shopping for undies at the new Victoria’s Secret store in the pre-security shopping mall area of John F. Kennedy International Airport’s (JFK) Terminal 4.

Hudson Group Retailrers JFK Terminal 4 NY, NY

There’s a Victoria’s Secret store at Pittsburgh International Airport.  And there used to be A Victoria’s Secret store at Washington’s Reagan National Airport.   But the folks at the Hudson Group say this is the first Victoria’s Secret travel concept shop in a US airport.

The difference? In addition to lingerie and body care products, the shop carries travel accessories such as passport holders, luggage tags, sunglasses, and key rings.

Fresh, fun art exhibits at Phoenix Airport

If you’ve got some time to spend at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), be sure to spend some of that time touring the current exhibits offered by the airport museum.

PHX Javalini

(Javelini, by Wendy Timm)

In Terminal 2, and exhibit titled Laughing Matters: Arizona Humor From Tohono Chul Park, Tucson is on view in the security checkpoint entry area.

Arizona artists, in a variety of media, express what they think is funny about our region — from the whimsical to the satirical, the silly to the absurd. Artists explore the comical side of Arizona life in artwork that may lampoon the state’s landmarks, unusual animals, or the myth and reality of the Wild West.

PHX horse head

In Terminal 3,  Alysa Bennett’s drawings and sculpture of horses are on display, along with collected craft items and artwork by Southwest Native Americans,  and ceramics by contemporary Arizona artists.

PHX Oro Ranch

And in Terminal 4, you’ll find an exhibition of  photography by Jay Dusard of cowboys from the American West.

There’s more. Lots more.  So here’s a link to a complete list of what’s on view.
