Watch that airport Wi-Fi

Now this is scary:

According to this report, its pretty easy for folks to hack into airport Wi-Fi systems.  Free or not.  So say the folks at AirTight Networks, a wireless security firm that recently sent hackers to 20 U.S. airports.

They say they found it incredibly easy to see hack into the systems and see what folks were doing on their laptops.

The report offers some tips to stay safe.  So read ‘em over – and be careful out there.

Free chocolate from Air France; free cookies in Columbus

air-francered-envelope

To celebrate the Year of the Ox, which began on January 26th, Air France is giving each passenger on flights to China, Singapore and Vietnam a “Hong Bao,” or red envelope.

Red symbolizes luck, and in China and other Asian countries it is customary to give red envelopes filled with money on the New Year.

Air France is handing out red envelopes through January 28th, but instead of money, the envelopes are filled with chocolate coins.

Meanwhile, in Columbus, Ohio, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines are commemorating 50 years of passenger service at Port Columbus International Airport (CMH). Festivities include free cookies for all Delta and United passengers on Thursday, January 29th.

Traveling with pets: JetBlue’s JetPaws program

While some airlines are making it harder to travel with your pet, JetBlue Airways is promoting its pet-friendliness.

The airline’s JetPaws pet program offers pets and their people a free, downloadable e-booklet highlighting pet-friendly hotels, restaurants, parks and animal hospitals in some of JetBlue’s destination cities and a list of Travel Petiquette guidelines, which outline the social graces of jetting with small dogs and cats.

You can read more about the JetPaws program here, but in the meantime check out this photo.

Free stuff: Win one of 40 free trips in Virginia.

To mark the 40th anniversary of the state’s “Virginia is for Lovers” marketing campaign, Virginia tourism officials are giving away 40 trips in 40 weeks.

Each has a different theme. And as far as I can tell even the grand prize options don’t include airfare.  But if you live out that way or win a prize and can get over there, it seems like a lot of fun and definitely worth sending in an entry.

For Stuck at the Airport fans, note that the first week’s prize, which will be given away on February 20th, 2009, has an aviation theme.   Activities center around Dulles International Airport in Chantilly, Va.

The prize package includes two night’s lodging at a Hyatt Place hotel, a ride in a Biplane, and a private tour of the National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, just down the road from Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD).

I’m holding out for Trip #27: it includes a chance to be a judge at the Chincoteague’s annual Oyster Festival – and hopefully lots of oysters.
