Tools for travelers: Inc.com’s Quick Hits blog

money

Inc.com has a new blog -  Quick Hits – filled with tips, discounts and freebies for business-related tools, services, and products.

Looks like travel tips are on the agenda as well:  this week’s blog entries include a review of the pricey Visa Black Card (it includes concierge service) and a link to my recent MSNBC.com column  Money Saving Tips for Tightwad Travelers.

Glimmers of hope?

Two items caught my eye today that seem like encouraging steps in the right direction.

From the Airline Biz blog, - a note about Continental Airlines saying they’d make it a policy to let passengers deplane if they’d been stuck on an airplane for more than three hours.

And from the Chicago Tribune: an article about how United and other airlines are (finally? once again?) paying attention to cleaning their airplanes more often.

Tips for travel tightwads: book the “flagpole” room

One summer, when my travel budget was really tight, I took my mother with me on my work-related road trips. Not because she was great company, but because with her in tow I could get a senior discount on motel rooms.

As you can imagine, there were some serious downsides to that scheme, but at the time it seemed to make sense.

I’ve wised up over the years and found other ways to cut travel costs.   And so have the folks who were kind enough to share their “tightwad travel tips” for my Well-Mannered Traveler column this week on MSNBC.com.

One frequent traveler says she picks up magazines other air passengers have left behind.   Another says she gets cheap hotel rooms by asking for the “flagpole room.”

Read the full column – “Money-saving tips for travel tightwads” -complete with this cool illustration- on MSNBC.com and send me your tips so I can put them in a future column.

How to get a job as an airline food tester

File under: be careful what you wish for.

A traveler who wrote to complain to Virgin Atlantic owner Richard Branson about the food on a recent flight  has been invited to pop on over and help pick out food and wine for future Virgin Atlantic flights.

The letter – which included pictures of the offending food – was really funny and was  quickly “e-forwarded” around the world.

Real all about it – but not before dinner – here.
