Some airports go green; others go white as snow

Remember putting snowballs in the freezer during the winter so you’d have them to play with once summer rolled around?

This story about snow-recycling from the Telegraph is sort of like that: A new airport being built in Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido will collect winter snow, keep it insulated and on ice, and then use the old snow to chill the liquid used in the airport’s cooling system during the hot summer months.

Government officials predict the project will save 2,100 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

I predict giant summer snowball fights.

Visit SFO, end up in outer space

We’re coming up on Halloween and the anniversary of the Orson Welles-directed radio show of War of the Worlds.

So it’s a perfect time to schedule a trip to San Francisco International Airport (SFO) just to see a wonderful exhibition filled with more than 300 classic space-related products ranging from the “fantastically silly to the truly visionary.”

Out of this World! The Twentieth-Century Space Invasion of American Pop Culture,” features everything from flying saucer toys, space guns, rocket ships and robots, to everyday household objects like air fresheners, sewing needles and packaged foods.

Take a look:

Out of this World! also includes four sculptures by artist and collector Clayton Bailey, who began making life-sized robots back in 1975 using pieces of cookware, vacuum cleaners, bicycles, automobiles, and a variety of home appliances.

The exhibition is located post-security in Terminal 3 and will be on view through March 14, 2009.

New art exhibit at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport

A realistic bronze cast of a longhorn, 16 engraved and carved miniature limestone and glass chairs, an abstract sculpture created with textured cast aluminum and three whimsically painted sheet metal cats.

These are just a few examples of the multi-media art show in the latest exhibit at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

All the work is by native Austin artists and offers just a peek at what you’ll see at two upcoming local shows.

The art exhibit runs through January, but don’t forget that the Austin airport has live music in several spots inside the airport every week. Here’s where to find it:

• Highland Lakes Bar – 3:30-5:30 p.m., Mondays thru Fridays
• Lefty’s Bar & Grille on 6th Street – 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., Wednesdays & Thursdays
• Earl Campbell’s Sports Bar – 3:30-5:30 p.m., Wednesdays thru Fridays
• Waterloo Records/Austin City Limits – 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., Fridays

Enjoy!

Customer appreciation day at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Int’l Airport

Here’s unusual and welcome news from an airport:

Today, Friday, Oct. 17, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) is having an appreciation celebration for passengers.

No joke!

South Atlanta High School’s 20-member Drum Line kicks-off today’s event, which will include a costumed Buckingham Palace Guard, face painters, musical performances, an African storyteller and traditional dance from Atlanta Asian Culture and Arts Center performers.

The party kicks off in the Main Terminal/Atrium at 12:30 with the high school Drum Line. Part of the promised entertainment is a “game show host on a Segway.”

The costumed palace guards start the afternoon on Concourse E at 1:30 p.m and will be followed by Spanish Guitarist, Cucho Garcia, African story-teller Cynthia Watts and a traditional dance from Atlanta Asian Culture and Arts Center performers.

Maybe every airport should make Friday customer appreciation day!
